Arvydas Sabonis suffered a heart attack

Portland Trail Blazers legend Arvydas Sabonis suffered a heart attack while playing basketball Tuesday night in his native Lithuania, but his condition is not believed to be life threatening.

Sabonis was taken to a hospital for emergency medical care and is expected to remain there for at least one week, according to international web site Sportalas.com.

"Our thoughts are with Arvydas and his family at this time," the Blazers said in a prepared statement. "We wish him well in a speedy recovery."

The Blazers drafted the 7-foot-3 center in 1986, but he did not play with the team until 1995. He retired after the 2002-03 season and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame this August. He stopped through Portland for a celebration at Pioneer Courthouse Square August 18.

Sabonis, who lives in Kaunas, Lithuania, runs a youth basketball clinic in his hometown and is part owner of Zalgiris, one of the oldest teams in the Euroleague. He is a hero in Lithuania, a small country of about 3 million people, and was the first Lithuanian to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

I wish him the best, glad it wasn't life threatening. I wonder if Michael has 6 rings if Sabonis plays for Portland all those years.

He was a great player, i saw him on NBATV classics in the playoffs his first season. Too bad us fans caught him on the downside of his career. He would have been something much more special in the minds of nba fans had he come over 10 years earlier.

Glad he's recovering. That's got to be pretty scary. I was always amazed watching him play for the Blazers. But it always reminds me of how they were robbed by the refs against the Lakers and their own collapse in the 4th:
