Evidence Suggests Updated Timeline Towards Yellowstone's Supervolcano Eruption

Geologist have been aware of fresh magma moving in the Yellowstone's super volcano system. Previously this was thought to precede an eruption by thousands of years. Recent evidence by Hannah Shamloo, a graduate student at Arizona State University, demonstrates that perhaps the timeline from the underground basin filling to eruption is more on the scale of decades. A super volcano eruption has the power to alter life's story on this earth and even destroy all life on a continent. In light of this, it seems like a good time to invest some effort and resources into finding ways to prepare, delay or deflect the potential threat.

    Good luck delaying or deflecting.

    Arizona State Grad?

I'm sure James Harden has banged her already.

Rockets don't even have a SUPERteam, this SuperVolcano will never happen.

this is why i've always laughed at combating man-made anything. this planet and universe for that matter don't care. the sun has killed billions if not trillions of life on earth but 'aint nobody trying to turn off the sun. viruses, the things are behave as both living and non-living things have killed billions. natural disasters have extincted way more species than the human species has and it's not even close.

I thought they were going to shoot it with space lasers or something? Or was that a Bond movie villian's plan to make it erupt?

Movies have taught me that once the crazy scientist from Arizona State warns you that it's gonna blow, you can outrun a supereruption in an old banged up 4x4 pickup truck that the park ranger left with the keys above tucked above the visor.

    NASA's got this.

NASA's plan is to drill a hole into the side of the volcano and pump water through it. When the water comes back out, it'll be heated to over 600 degrees, slowly cooling the volcano. The team hopes that given enough time, this process will take enough heat from the volcano to prevent it from ever erupting.

As a bonus, the scientists are proposing to use the heated water as a source of geothermal energy, potentially powering the entire Yellowstone region with heat from the volcano that wants to destroy it. A geothermal generator could produce energy at around $0.10 per kWh, competitive with other energy sources.

Interesting, but it's not going to be able to compete at 10 cents/kwh without a Rick Perry subsidy.
