Charlie Batch will not be a Texan, he just signed with the Steelers. Steelers sign Batch as one-year 'insurance policy' June 17, 2002 SportsLine.com wire reports PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers signed oft-injured quarterback Charlie Batch to a one-year contract Monday, bringing some experience to the cadre of backups for Kordell Stewart. The Steelers were interested in Batch, 27, as an inexpensive, one-year insurance policy. Batch was reportedly willing to accept something near the league minimum salary of $525,000. Batch also becomes the Steelers' only backup quarterback to have started in the NFL in the past four years. The Detroit Lions cut Batch on June 3, two years after giving him a $10 million bonus to sign a five-year, $50 million contract. Since the Lions drafted Batch with the 30th overall pick in 1998, he has thrown for 9,016 yards with 49 touchdowns, 40 interceptions and a quarterback rating of 76.9. Several injuries - including a cracked bone in his back, a broken thumb, displaced knee cap, and repeatedly damaged ribs - have hampered his career. Batch grew up in nearby Homestead and starring at Steel Valley High School. The Steelers cut rookie, free agent quarterback Travis Cole to make room for Batch. Last week, the Steelers signed backup quarterback Tommy Maddox to a four-year contract extension.
