Who knew that the Spanish built a fort 300 miles inland in the 1560's? Cool stuff and lots of material for what if? questions. Can you imagine Alabama being a Spanish-speaking area?

Cool stuff. But didn't we already know that the Spanish had a presence in the area? Isn't there some island off the coast of NC with horses (which aren't native to the region), because the Spanish tried to colonize it?

We had hints of a Spanish presence far into the interior, but no physical proof until now. This is actually a very significant archaeological find. Nearly 300 miles into the interior! As the author pointed out, had gold been discovered in any reasonable quantity at all, the Spanish, gold and silver hungry, if they were anything, would have poured resources into the area.

    Thanks, OP. Good stuff!
