Redskins' practice goes on despite scare in nearby woods

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- A package accompanied by a rambling letter and addressed to Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder was forcibly opened by a bomb squad Tuesday after an employee heard music playing inside it.

The package, opened remotely with a water cannon, contained four toy dolls.

"There was music coming from it, and it's sort of unusual to have a package that is singing to you," said Lt. Eric Noble of the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office. "The toys were electronic in nature. They had an on-off switch. Apparently during transit one of the 'on' switches was activated."

Noble said the letter and package came from a local man who had written another letter to Snyder in recent weeks. The Redskins had notified authorities after the first letter was received.

"It was just a bit rambling, a super-fan probably, but just a little bit odd in his writing," Noble said. "It was ... very innocent, without threat. Anything beyond that, very pro-Washington Redskins."

Noble said the decision to call the bomb squad was more of a precautionary measure. The package, which measured approximately 24 inches by 15 inches, was opened near the woods at Redskins Park during the afternoon practice at the training camp.

No one was evacuated, and the practice went on as scheduled. There were no injuries.

Snyder declined comment.

Noble said the dolls had no sports connection, and he did not know why the dolls were being sent to Snyder. He said the man who sent the package might be interviewed, but not charged.

"Absolutely no crime has been committed," Noble said.
