I know it's tough to get information with the media blackout, but does anybody know the fate of the people on the Bolivar Peninsula? I have read speculation that a lot of people who might have stayed would have gone to the Big Store, which is like the town square of Bolivar, which is one of the only buildings thought to be hurricane proof. No pictures have been shown of the Big Store and there is speculation that it might have been destroyed along with the people who went there for shelter. I know this is just speculation, but I'm worried. Does anybody have any information?

I heard from a pretty credible source that they found 9 bodies washed up on shore the morning after the hurricane...

And thats just a momentary search from searim to the ferry..

More people died than they're letting on.

Why are they keeping that from the public? Hurricanes are known to cause deaths. I don't get it.

I found it odd that the government banned news helicopters from going over there until Sunday.

The communities on Bolivar were almost completely destroyed.

There is speculation that most of the people who stayed have been washed out to sea.

If a lot of people died and they reported a large number, maye some people would take hurricanes more seriously and evacuate next time.

Haiti was hit by 4 storms in less than a month. They just got piled on: Hanna, Fay, Gustav, AND Ike. I've seen the death toll reported to be anywhere from 550 to 1,000+ with about 74 coming from Ike. A million have been left homeless.

I think what was worst is when they finally showed the Bolivar Peninsula, there was nobody on the island. No rescue teams or nothing. You would think that one of the hardest hit areas would be the place where most search and rescue missions would be going on.

They might have had a preliminary helicopter sweep on the first few days when the media was being blocked from the area.

Looking at the housing destruction that approached tsunami levels in some places, probably few survived if they were in the hardest hit areas.

i'm not understanding the media blackout either.... people have a right to know what happened.

    it's very strange.

Does anybody have the number of people that decided to stay?

I do find it odd that more people have died outside of texas due to Ike than inside.

I'm afraid for every car there was a person who stayed behind - though some have lived to talk about it - I think many have not. I hope I'm wrong.

There just wasn't a lot of searching and rescuing to do on Bolivar. Most of the houses were completely destroyed. Any survivors were likely readily visible.

That is a pretty good amount of missing. I guess you can't declare dead until you have a body which may not be the case for this one. :(

I read that thread other day. Man, some of emails posted there were crazy...who knows if they are true.

wow, that is a lot of people missing. More than I would thought there would be. Prayers go out to the families that need prayers for sure.
