Patrick Ewing might return to Orlando Magic as assistant coach

Tim Povtak | Sentinel Staff Writer
    8:21 PM EDT, June 25, 2007

Future Hall of Fame center Patrick Ewing, who finished a 17-year NBA playing career in Orlando, could be returning to the Magic next season as an assistant coach under Stan Van Gundy.

According to those close to Ewing, he is strongly considering an offer from Van Gundy to rejoin the Magic and help coach 21-year-old center Dwight Howard.

Ewing didn't coach in the NBA last season, leaving the Houston Rockets after three years working under head coach Jeff Van Gundy, Stan's brother. He also served as an assistant coach with the Washington Wizards.

Ewing, 44, played 15 seasons for the New York Knicks, becoming their all-time leading scorer (23,665 points) and rebounder (10,759 rebounds). He was the No. 1 pick of the 1985 draft out of Georgetown University.

He played his final year with the Magic, when he averaged six points and four rebounds during the 2001-02 season.

Van Gundy, who replaced Brian Hill as the Magic head coach, declined to comment specifically on his staff, which he is close to finalizing.

"We're almost done, but there are a few things to finish,'' he said.

Dwight Howard could use some help with his non-dunking offense, good move in my opinion. Look for a Patrick Ewing Jr. sighting in their summer league!?

I am actually surprised. I had the sense that JVG shed no tears when PEw left the house.

All Dwight needs is to end up a big man shooting fadeaway's and getting dunked on by guards 6'6 and up.

    And?

Reportedly SVG pitched Rafe hard to JVG and Voila! trade.
Reportedly SVG offered ass't coach job to JVG but no Voila!

They are brothers, and tight. So, if one is down on somebody (PEw) the chances are that the other will stand clear. If, in fact, JVG was down on PEw, of course.

It's all stemmed from the Pat Riley & Knicks root. SVG was also an assistant for Pat Riley in the Knicks but he followed Riley to the Heat. JVG was tied up with his contract and stayed in the Knicks.

Pat Ewing is not the right big man coach for Howard. Ewing may teach some defensive skills but his offense skills just dont fit Howard's talents. I cant imagine Howard shoots a slow motion turnaround J.

This makes me want Hakeem to be an assistant coach for Yao.
