I would trade up for either of those guys, but you're underestimating Drummond's skill level. You have to adjust for age--you're only ever going to see the framework of a skillset at age 18. It's important to have that skeleton to build on and not just a raw athlete, otherwise you end up with Hasheem Thabeet, but Drummond has shown definite flashes of a real post game.
Orem, Superstars already have it at 18. Consider Sullinger. He came to Ohio State already regarded as a great offensive talent. He's got moves galore. College is only refining his game. Guys that are raw coming into college with huge athletic ability....most of the time they do not achieve superstar status. You could get about the same value in the 2nd round. This dude is shooting 29% from the FT line. He can't get double digit rebounds and he's most often the biggest guy on the floor. I'm sure he'll play in the NBA but there's nothing special that sticks out about his game. What distinguishes him is his size and athleticism. Sure he can show "flashes" of post moves. But he should already be a proficient post player. Whoever drafts him is taking a big chance.
Sullinger was still significantly older than Drummond when he first stepped into college basketball though. A span as short as 6 months can make a very big difference for an athlete that young. The amount of development which takes place between age 18 and age 19 is tremendous. I agree there are concerns about Drummond's offense, and I like Sullinger a lot myself. But, Drummond could already step on the court and perform similar to a Sam Dalembert type, and he has a chance to become the next Dwight Howard.
He's officially headed to the NBA. http://espn.go.com/nba/draft2012/st...-uconn-huskies-andre-drummond-declaring-draft
So why did he suck in college basketball? If he can dribble, shoot any at all, dunk the crap out of it... why not at least 15ppg?
He didn't suck... he was a double-double + 3 blocks per 36 minutes. He was pretty dominant in the paint on defense. He's only 18, that's why he wasn't spectacular on offense. A huge amount of skill development happens between age 18 and 20.
Drummond compared to A.Stoudamire and D.Howard Drummond gets compared to Stoudamire and Howard because both were athletic big men. Since neither Stoudamire or Howard went to college it is best to evaluate their high school. Andre Drummond: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/UH3_K4uIsxA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Amare Stoudamire: <object width="640" height="360"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/7Z-x05PoOpk&rel=0&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/7Z-x05PoOpk&rel=0&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></embed></object> Dwight Howard: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/xwy66mW2qQ8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Drummond is most like Cousins Do you think that their rookie years to Drummond's 1 year in college is comparable? If so...may not look that well for kid Drummond. Stoudamire played like a monster his rookie year dunking on everyone. But maybe with better spacing Drummond could shine as well. Howard showed flashes of how he was going to dominate the paint outmuscling everyone. Not sure if Drummond is a strong as Howard. Also as was pointed out Drummond doesn't have the "spring" Stoudamire or Howard have but he has a bigger base then both of them...similar to Cousins. Drummond Comparable Measurements Don't have his measurements yet so this is from what I could find on him. Pre-Draft Measurements Name Height w/o Shoes Height w/shoes Weight Wingspan Reach Body Fat Hand Length Hand Width No Step Vert No Step Vert Reach Max Vert Max Vert Reach Bench Agility Sprint Rank Drafted Amare Stoudemire - 2002 6' 8.5" 6' 10" 233 7' 1.75" 9' 0.5" NA 0 0 32.0 11' 8.5" 35.5 12' 0" 12 11.19 3.25 12 9 Dwight Howard - 2004 6' 9" 6' 10.25" 240 7' 4.5" 9' 3.5" NA 0 0 30.5 11' 10" 35.5 12' 3" 7 11.21 3.14 29 1 DeMarcus Cousins - 2010 6' 9.5" 6' 10.75" 292 7' 5.75" 9' 5" 16.4 9.25 10 23.5 11' 4.5" 27.5 11' 8.5" NA 11.40 3.55 NA 4 Chris Webber - 1993 6' 9" NA 263 7' 3.5" NA NA 0 0 NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA 1 Andre Drummond - 2012 6' 10 - 6' 11 245-285 7' 5" I think Drummond being bigger with less springs then both Stoudamire and Howard means he is going to have less posterizing dunks between the three and not as dominating in the paint. He has court vision closer to Webber and Cousins which is great. He may have the best handles between all of them. If he is actually played in UConn around the weight of 285 then he will be more of Cousins future. I think Drummond will be more athletic, better defensively but will never be as polished as Cousins is offensively. But him weighing around 260-270 will allow him to bully/outmuscle most players like how Cousins or Howard do. So on potential alone...top 3 pick easily between him, Davis, and Jones the Third with Drummond probably being number 1. I don't see him getting out of the top 5. Cousins was drafted fifth only because of his attitude problem. He so far has had a better career then Evan Turner, Derrick Favors, or Wesley Johnson. Some may say even better then John Wall...I am not part of that some. So in conclusion Drummond is worth the chance for whatever team drafts him. If by a miracle the Rockets got him...I wouldn't hate.
Watching some videos on Drummond, his body movement reminds me of JJ Hickson, which would be somewhat fitting, as Hickson is also considered a soft guy who doesn't really know what he's doing. So... is Andre Drummond (going to be) the center version of JJ Hickson?
Drummond = taller Hickson? That may not be a bad thing. Could be a very good thing. I can see the similarity body wise. Hickson had a better post game in his one year in college. I think Drummond is bigger and stronger. He will be big for his position instead undersized like Hickson. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ATEO8BUTq8c" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/sx9o31zcNgk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/jEX0yYQ17lU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
This guy has been impressive. http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/6585/andre-drummond I wish rockets could've drafted him.
