Is anyone sympathetic to the joe blake character? I'm 99% more interested in the sci-fi of the show than the will-they-won't-they.

At best, he was the 5th most interesting character in the show. If his role remains prominent going forward, the guy has to raise his game next season (assuming there is a 2nd season).

I love the premise and think it will be even better next year.

    The action is lagging imo
I think Agent Carter does the THROW BACK a bit better
[then again it is more SPY-y]

I hope Next season picks up some

Talk me down, bros. I'm thinking about abandoning this series. I've watched through episode 6 and it's just so damn dreary and dark. Does the season end pay off?

Just skip straight to the last episode since the rest of the episodes aren't any better.

Liked the premise, but this show has no pulse.

Agree. I stopped watching after Season 1, despite the twist at the end. Having a 'great premise' as its only redeeming feature, when it got it from a novel, is not saying much....as in, "Ah, Novel-idea."

I did like Rufus Sewell's character though. Only thing I got in to.

btw: when looking up his name just now, I noticed almost every episode is directed by a different person. I didn't know that.

    Series Directed by
    Daniel Percival ... (3 episodes, 2015-2016)
    Brad Anderson ... (1 episode, 2015)
    Karyn Kusama ... (1 episode, 2015)
    Nelson McCormick ... (1 episode, 2015)
    Ken Olin ... (1 episode, 2015)
    Michael Rymer ... (1 episode, 2015)
    David Semel ... (1 episode, 2015)
    Michael Slovis ... (1 episode, 2015)
    Bryan Spicer ... (1 episode, 2015)

Ubik is his best book. Always with Philip K Dick, and to an extent with all scifi, when you juxtapose something real with its imitation, you simultaneously bring down the real while exalting the fake. The first example of this is with humans and androids a la Bladerunner/Electric Sheep.

In Ubik you are comparing reality with a virtual or sub-reality, almost the opposite of the human conception of heaven. The take home message is that the virtual reality can be significant as well; there can be meaning to glean from living and struggling to survive in it even when you know it isn't real. Then, you can transpose those lessons to our own reality, giving yourself an argument to subsist even if all will turn to dust and we are all aspiring towards some kind of eternal salvation.

Forty years later and American sci fi still has not surpassed Philip K Dick. Gotta look to Japan for something beyond.

I thought it dragged a bit also, but to me that's not a negative. It's not meant to move at a fast pace.

Really enjoyed season 1. Looking forward to season 2.

I feel the same way. The setup is compelling but the protagonists have irrationality stupid tendencies that serve more as plot devices than sympathetic character flaws.

They've spent so much time on Joe Blow (2nd protagonist?), and I'm like why...he's a ducking nazzy double agent who wants to double screw the chick in every way imaginable. He's also acting unrealistically and he's certainly in no position to waffle around. They even make him look worse later on with his side family.

Unfortunately it seems the most compelling character is that Nazi colonel.

It just feels like they have two seasons worth of stories but they're using it to stretch it our to 4-5 while riding on the American occupation by the most evil bastards around.

I'm not hopeful for season2 but maybe they'll find their stride in season3 with a show runner who 'll make a clean break from Dicks unfinished work

Couldn't get into it -- slow and boring.

Well I really enjoyed it. It may be a bit slow at times but it doesn't bother me at all. There are some truly haunting and heartbreaking moments and some interesting characters (and yes some fairly one dimensional ones too). It definitely left me wanting more.

Im surprised nobody is talking about season 2. I personally found it much more appealing than season 1. The story line seemed to move very very quick with many different arcs. Where season 1 left off is a drastic change in where season 2 finishes. I did find some of the plot twists to be a bit cliquish.

When I was in Toronto, I watched them film this scene, which can be found at the beginning of episode 5.
