Am I the only one that thinks the Knicks aren't crazy ?

Lets face it , there's been a lot of **** posting here the last week or so , but from that , the narrative has arisen that Carmelo is surely coming and that the only hold up is that the Knicks front office is dysfunctional/ crazy .

Am I crazy for thinking the Knicks are completely rational for not wanting to take back Meyers Leonard or Ryan Anderson ?

But but but , you say !! Something is better than nothing ... Well that's not entirely true.

The Knicks do have other options

    A) buy him out .. Yes this costs the most money right now . But you clear cap space and have the most flexibility this way.

    B) keep him . Even if you just straight up bench his ass , Carmelo will either
    a) opt out in which case you have flexibility next year or
    b) opt in , in which case he's an expiring contract and you get flexibility the year after than.

In both Anderson and Leonard's case , you take on a player that takes up salary a year beyond even the worst case scenario of melo opting in .

So when you guys are saying the Knicks have 0 leverage and they need to take what other teams are giving them , it's just not right .

Sure , melo could threaten to opt in , but if he's miserable in NYK and is facing another year of it , he's going to opt out .

The "proposed trade" what does NYK even get ? Harkless ?? Is harkless and a second rounder worth taking on 3 years of Meyers Leonard ?

I think the Knicks have more leverage than most people think ... And I DO think they are trying to do the right thing and trade Carmelo , but the fact that we have to move Anderson and most teams don't want Anderson unless they can unload their own "bad" contracts ... And NYK doesn't want to take too much future salary absent proper compensation ... Is making this deal hard.

As a final reference point , look at all the "real" reporting .

At this point , no reputable reporter has said anything other than the ROX and NYK are working on a trade .

All these insiders with their bs is clouding the perception.

Maybe they are getting info from players and the players want this to happen ( I have no doubt melo does) . But for this to work , I think the best case scenario for NYK is to buy him out for a low amount . And hopefully he chooses Houston.

This would cause such an outrage around the league and the players association would step in. You'd lose so much good will, they would never do this.

Knicks can't even keep their stars happy.

I seriously doubt their ability to put a playoff caliber team together. With or without Melo.

Not sure if they are really crazy or just flat out delusional and champions of wasting time.

According to rumors they wouldn't get Leonard back but yeah, the Knicks are crazy and Melo will be here anyway at some point -> if he really wants.

If Melo actually wants to leave, yes they are crazy. You don't piss off superstars in a player's league.

Crazy thing is Cleveland was mentioned as the other destination but there wasn't anything relevant what they would offer.

At one point it was all Houston.

They currently have zero leverage and now believe that waiting longer will gain them more leverage. The Pacers did this with Paul George as well, and he didn't even have a no-trade clause. It doesn't end well.

Knicks don't have a clue. They just gave $71mill to a guy they traded away previously

The players are watching and unless the Knicks want to have to overpay mediocre players to be their starters they can't stretch this out too far. Money will talk but only so far and if they are not careful they could be making THJr's deal look like a bargain compared to the crap they will have to overpay other players to be willing to go there.

Yeah, in the end we can outbit the Cavs in every scenario unless they trade Love -> which is not happening.

And by everything we got these past days seems also pretty clear that Melo prefers Houston over Cleveland anyway so, even if they end up buying him out we should be ok.

Until James Dolan is fired, I will always believe the Knicks are crazy.

This is spot on...Knicks are in a lose/lose situation. Morey is not stupid, he is only going to give up the bare minimum to get Melo, so it's not really the Knicks choice on what they get in return.

If they make Melo stay all season, the organization will lose TONS of reputation around the league from all star players. They will become the Sacramento Kings of the East.

Holding a star player hostage isn't going to go over well with trying to recruit or even KEEP any star player you go after.

I wonder what Porzingis will think watching his team bench an all-star while refusing to grant his wish to be traded?

People seem to think this is the NFL. No, in the NBA, Players (especially star players) get what they want. They run the league.

If the knicks treat melo like that and keep him to bench him, no star free agent wil sign there.

Melo can threaten to opt in and hinder their cap space more. Things can get ugly if they want.

Melo was fair, he gave them his prime years and they could not even build a team that could consistently make the playoffs. He waived it for the clipps last season but the clipps said no.

The knicks have learned their lesson. Do you think they're ever going to give out a no trade clause again?

And of course they can buy him out, but they are actually getting some value in a melo trade and it wont cost them $50 million.

Knicks can definitely make a power move, but that's about the only real leverage they have unless Melo expands his NTC wishlist, not to mention a power move would be a really, really, REALLY dumb idea.

The combination of this thread title and the length of the post made it an immediate TL;DR
