BANGUI: A team of nine players from the Central African Republic, their trainer, his assistant and an official have all gone missing during a stopover in Paris on their way home.

The group stopped over in Paris on August 13 after playing an African Cup of Nations match in Rabat, Morocco, and has not been seen since, a source here said.
National trainer Jean-Robert Madozin, his assistant, the president of the Central African Republic Basketball Federation, Colonel Gaston Gambor, and nine players all disappeared during the stopover, said the source.

A journalist from state radio who accompanied the team said the members of the squad all hoped to find spots on French teams to improve their skills before eventually returning to the Central African Republic.

Another commentator said the defections were to be expected, given the poor social conditions existing currently in the poverty-stricken country.

The Central African basketball team finished ninth out of the 12 teams in this year's African Cup of Nations tournament - one of their worst performances in the competition, which they won in 1974 and 1987.
