Gary Kubiak is far and away better than Jim Caldwell. Now that Peyton is done, Caldwell is showing his true colors as a subpar game manager, with absolutely no creativity, and zero cajones. Peyton has masked ALL of that team's deficiencies for so long, it's rather shocking to see JUST how bad that offense really is without him. Ask any Indianapolis fan, and they will tell you that he is an absolute buffoon.
I definitely had questions about whether Caldwell was a good coach or just another guy, but Indy has had similar success with clearly declining talent since Dungy left. That's not just Peyton doing that.
I think there's one great coach in the AFC - Bellichick. The next tier has Mike Tomlin on it. The third tier is Rex Ryan.... maybe John Harbaugh. After that, its a cluster of 12 guys. I'd guess Kubiak is among the top half of that group but.... it changes yearly. And it's based more on his (while mediocre) consistentcy. I think guys like Lewis, Haley, Del Rio, Fox... they're (mostly) passive coaches that show no signs of being able to sustain whatever might work - which means they're getting lucky, taking advantage of a weak schedule, etc. Honestly, other than Turner (and the 4 top guys), no one in the conference wins consistently.
I'm not so sure about that. In his first year Caldwell did win 14 games, but that was so close to Dungy's era and mostly the same guys that you could chalk it up to his philosophy and influence carrying over. Then last year they dropped down to 10 wins and are looking pretty old on both sides of the field. And with the way they started this year it seems pretty clear that Peyton was the glue holding that together. If Caldwell can get them through this transition (not just Peyton, but just an entire team needing some rebuilding), I'll call him a good coach.

Good coaches win more games than average or below average coaches. They maximize available talent. The talent level between NFL teams is not as great as it may seem. However, the few elite players in the league make a significant impact. For example, how would the Saints be without Brees? The elite coaches in the league also have a significant impact. Take Belicheck and Brady out of New England and watch what happens. There is your answer.
Lol, what?? Belichick only cheated because he's an arrogant *******...not because he needed to. Since he's been in New England, he's been about as good a coach as the NFL has ever seen. The Patriots don't need to cheat to be good.
His playcalling has been very very very very very spotty at times.. especially at crucial times in a close game.
But he didn't take Bellicheck with him. Yeah, the talent level on the Patriots is a cut above, but not that far above the other teams. NE coaching is also superior. While there may not be "parity" between the teams, they are not light years apart in talent, overall. The intangibles win games, that was on display in NO Sunday. It is almost like professional golf, the little things make the difference.
Does that logic fly with Barry Bonds too? He didn't have to cheat . . . hell their is less proof of his cheating than beliCheat People cheat because it helps them win. He is a good coach but won't ever be Bill Walsh because he has an ASTERICK [*] by his name forever as a cheater Rocket River
Kubiak should have been fired two years ago. As a head coach he's in the bottom third of the League. As an offensive coordinator top third ....issues not withstanding. The bummer is that even when he's gone Wade will move right in under the Good Ole Boys code...Again, like Kubiak, Wade is tailored for his current position.....but not cut out for the head job. We have plenty of talent and will continue to firm up this team. The problem is the Texans will have to continue to count on their enormous talent to overcome coaching deficiencies over the next 4- 5 years no matter what happens.
I believe it was Harvey dent that once said, you either retire a champion or coach long enough to get yourself fired. <<this does not apply to Kubiak though. He'll never get fired. (insert silly face)
