Additional Insight from McHale (and a little from Morey)

Tonight, the Rockets had a "special event" for season ticket holders -- the chance to meet and greet with Morey and McHale at Vic and Anthony's. It was a surprisingly small gathering, about 50-60 folks there. Morey made some general introductory comments and then McHale spoke.

Very funny, easy mannered, guy, just as you see on TV. Huge guy, massive shoulders, the whole bit. They opened it up for questions and yes, clutchfan here had about 20, but I only got one out.

"Kevin - I hated you in 81 and 86, but best of luck as the rockets coach. From the press conference this morning, it appears pretty clear that you are adopting an approach like the NFL, where you will have an offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator, and you will take a head coach role. Can you talk about that approach?"

    His response included the following:

    - confirmed that he would have a lead OC and DC (which we knew)

    - a strong part of that philosophy is that there is so much preparation that it makes sense for you to have a specialist devoted to each side of the ball.

    - when you give the assistant OC and DC the responsibility, they will own it, get credit for it, do a better job of it, and continue to get better at this job. This structure will translate on the floor. There will be enough credit to go around.

    - the rockets must continue to play fast and he will run adelman's offense (which we knew).

    - the rockets must individually and collectively defend better. As for team defense, that means it is understandable when Kobe hits you with his third move, he will get past a good defender, but the help defense must be there. As for individual defense, Kobe beating you with his third move is understandable, but you can't allow Kobe or anyone else make a single move and take it to the basket. Individually, you have to take pride and responsibility for that, and be held accountable. (It felt like he was talking about Kevin Martin specifically, but didn't mention names).

    - a lot of so-called defensive coaches reduce the opposing team's total output by playing a slow game, reducing possessions. that's not great defense.

    - we are going to play fast on offense, which will generate many possessions. We have to limit the other team's offensive efficiency.

    - Points per possession and other statistics and measures (and he looked over at Morey when he said this) will tell you how well your defense is doing. (I was dying to ask a follow up, but it appeared from this answer and his body language that he will be very receptive to Morey's analytics).

(unfortunately, a lot of the other questions were nearly idiotic but McHale did his best to discuss basketball. He strikes me as a basketball junkie that could talk basketball all day. He would turn a question like "How do you like Houston" into a long discussion about how he liked Houston because he won two titles here, had the chance to play against the best like Hakeem and company, and described some of the physical challenges that presented.)

    -------------------

    Other tidbits:

    - Morey reiterated that priority No 1 is still to land a "star" player. Priority No. 2 is a center.

    - Morey feels that we have players that can develop to that level, singling out Lowry first, then PatPat as being far away in terms of development but possessing many of the skills and makeup. He next mentioned Kevin Martin as a guy, if he commits to defense, could reach the star level. He then listed Terrence Williams and Jordan Hill as having skillsets that could develop to the next level, but clearly was not suggesting they likely would develop. (His comment suggested that they could become stars based on physical gifts. Let there be no confusion however, Morey doesn't have a pie in the sky attitude or expectation about Williams or Hill, and almost seemed reluctant to mention their names.)

    - I desperately wanted to ask Morey if he felt there were other Zack Randolphs out there that could be had, but I'm sure he would have said he can't answer that for fear of tampering (he has given that kind of response for such questions in past events).

I had a ton of food after and some drinks, so I'm tired and happy. I'll try to remember any other tidbits and post them here. I just thought I'd share what I could with clutchfans.

I wasn't really on board with the hire, but after meeting McHale, I'm getting there. I like the way they are setting up the coaching staff. I know other teams have had lead assistants, etc, but this decision feels like a "new" approach.

    ----

Instead of a offense focused team under Adelman, or a defensive minded team under JVG, you have McHale that is a leader, communicator, and manager, that will do both, but have the best support possible.

How many of us wished we could keep Adelman on offense but bring in a van gundy for defense? Or vice versa.

Well, coaches of that vintage/stature wouldn't accept that kind or magnitude of help or meddling, whatever you want to call it. Adelman said the Rockets wanted input as to his staff, and that wasn't happening.

If we get the right OC and DC, I can see this model working quite well.

    Thanks for the info.

I'm on board with the personnel strategy, still not convinced with McHale and the OC/DC thing.

Thanks for the recap. Great job! I would have loved to have been there, if for no other reason than knowing I had season tickets. ;-)-

"We'd all be really happy if Yao comes back to play, and I hope he can," McHale said. "I think he'll give it his best shot. His body is going to dictate if he can come back and play. That's all going to be laid out in the future.
"But who wouldn't like Yao Ming, a big guy who can really make shots, just a huge force in the middle? That's out of my control. We'll see where that goes."

Thanks for the info/recap Rileydog. I too wasn't really happy with the hire at first, but I think Les/Morey were just looking for a big name to help attract Star players and free agents. In that sense I agree with the hire.

I don't know what it is, but I have a feeling McHale will give Rudy T a run for his money as my favorite Rockets coach of all time. He's also an ex-player that I feel will relate to this team. I think he'll be emotional on the sidelines for these guys because of the bonds he will build. How can he not fall in love with Lowry, Hayes and Scola?

Hope the players rally around him and do their parts. Sounds like he might not be a "player's coach" (stating that on the fact he said he will be very results oriented, i.e., if player's are slacking, they will be sitting right next to him on the bench...*cough cough* T-Will).

Let's see what happens, I'm excited and on board.

I actually really like the OC/DC system. I'll list a few pros and cons of it. (I am not a big football fan)

    Pros:
    - it takes full advantage of the X's and O's of the game
    - It puts people responsible for the downfalls of the team
    - There is a source of speciality where we can bring in the best at each position.
    - It is set up to where we can be good on both sides of the ball instead of one side based on the HC's best suit (Adelman- offense, JVG - defense, Thib - defense, etc.)

    Cons:
    - it decentralizes our coaching staff, which can be terrible. McHale has to be a true leader and watch dog over his staff.
    - If mcHale isn't up to date on all the things going on defense and offense, it could prove to be a disaster.

i think replacing adelman may not be as bad as people think.

    1. finch is able to run the same offense.
    2. mchale tested very well at late game decision making.
    3. a defensive coordinator means there is more accountability on that end now
    4. mchale developing big men is better than sikma. pat, hill, and thabeet are priority development right now.

finally, not that this makes a difference to the fans but all of this is had at a fraction of the cost of keeping Adelman and Co. not to mention they are hiring a young staff that can grow together and get better. if all works out they can be coaching longer than adelman who is near retirement.

Thanks - The burgeoning cynicism on the board is wearing me down and really taking some of the fun out of reading and posting. I appreciate the recap of the event minus any wild speculation or negativity.

I just don't see the internal conflicts that the Rockets have had over the last few years as being serious. I appreciate Alexander, Morey, and Adelman, and I don't think Adelman's departure is the sign of a some devious power struggle by anyone. The speculation on the board about this topic is just that... speculation.

I think one of the cons may be, if the the Rockets experience great success on offense or defense, they may have to outbid other teams to keep their own assistants.... but being good is a lousy reason NOT to do something, so it is irrelevant.

Following questions I would've asked Morey:

-Why lie about using the term "assets"?

-If you're reasoning for letting go Adelman was truly for basketball reasons, how exactly does Mchale measure up to Adelman's qualifications?

-If you're little money ball approach backfires, and Mchale gets no results next year, will you step down and apologize to Rocket fans for misleading us with you're intentions?

-How many PR reps do you have here secretly on 610, the chronicle, or clutchfans?

-If your sincerely trying to rebuild, why the hell are you bringing Yao back?

-How do you feel about ruining such a fine franchise?

I can see how they would like the idea of having Yao come back. They would probably not have to pay him much and can keep the China endorsements and in the oft chance that he plays well, he could be trade bait before playoffs. I wish I could hear more though! Thanks Rileydog!
