I met Audie Murphy's grandson once. He dated my wife's cousin. Coincidently I met him we when we were visiting my wifes grandfather at the hospital named after Murphy in San Antonio. The kid looked just like him which made it weird when we walked next to the big stutue of him.

I never heard of Audie Murphy. I am surprise Hollywood hasn't done a remake of To Hell and Back.

The site = the magazine? Or do they have a separate magazine?

Smart publishers have been leading the pack using their brand to promote their websites, since magazines and newspapers have been hit hardest by the advent of the internet. There's really no 'revival', just more exposure, since the internet is free and everywhere.

Historically, the Russians were always horning in on Finland, so Simo Hayha, the 'White Death', is a legend among the Finnish. My grandfather was full-blooded Finnish, and even though he grew up in America and fought in the Pacific during WWII, he would talk about this guy all the time. According to my grandfather, he was the embodiment of 'Sisu'.

That was the best story IMO. He should have been #1 instead of #5.

The White Death was my favorite. I absolutely love great snipers, and for him to do it with a regular rifle, is just unreal.

He lived to be 96 after having his jaw blown off.

Fark even has a tag for it now.

    ....uh........what??!?

Audie Murphy is an American war hero. He's one of the most highly decorated soldiers ever to serve.

I'm not trying to pile on you, but if you are an American over the age of 15 or so, you should probably know who he is.

Love cracked.com. Discovered it a little over a year ago and read it regularly.

Also, I felt the Indian guy should have moved ahead of the British soldier at least to #3. He managed to climb a mountain and storm 3 bunkers all while being shot 10-15 times. Then he gave death the finger and told him he wasn't going anywhere. The British guy just carried a sword.

I hadn't heard of him before either. Maybe we don't spend enough time discussing American War Heroes in American History. We never focused much on wars at all.

Audie Murphy was also a Texan, which makes him even more bad-ass.

I had never heard of Audie Murphy growing up in Texas, with US (11th grade) and Texas History (7th Grade) being my favorite subjects in school...

I would , however, add John Basilone to that list. His story will be featured in HBO's upcoming "The Pacific" miniseries.
He received the Congressional Medal of Honor, a Purple Heart, and a Navy Cross
