facts China refused to recognized the British sovereignty over HK and you know this because of ......... you have it backward. HK's prime locations / development are in HK island, followed by the harbor section of Kowloon the less developed area of HK are the new territories. . i know that ur being facetious. but facts were UK / Brits were making $, hand over fisk, off HK. UK has ruled many places on this great planet, in terms of profitability, none has come as close of a success as Hong Kong. Hong Kong had to pay Britain every year for the military expenses in HK. The economy was controlled by British companies e.g. Hong Kong Bank, Jardine, Swire, Wheelock, Cable & Wireless…etc. The incomes generated from the trades were huge while the taxes paid to HK were just leftovers to keep it alive. This was the main purpose for having a colony Buses, trains, trams, ferries…etc had to be purchased from Britain. These were opium replacements, in economic terms, and you are still addict to them.
https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong...raceful-pre-handover-efforts-deny-nationality Britain hardly cared about the HK people. Unless you were part of the HK elite, they made the conscious decision not to offer British nationality before the 1997 handover. It was cool that Portugal did the right thing and offered citizenship rights to the people of Macau.
Still interested in "facts?" Then you should read my post again. The huge development in Hong Kong and Kowloon were insupportable without the infrastructure in the New Territories. That's a fact. You can have all the expensive, shiny buildings on the Island and on Kowloon that you desire, but if they have no water, electricity, if they can't import and export goods, they aren't viable. As for China not "recognizing British sovereignty over Hong Kong?" That had been the case for some time and no "revelation."
@KingCheetah - please slide into my DM"s to discuss the uprising's ramifications with respect to the KTP and its current status.
Don't really disagree, it does look like complicity from the Trump Admin. At the same time, I don't know if it is really all that helpful to the protesters of Hong Kong to look like they have the Americans on their side. China would like to cast the protest as foreign agitation and not a legitimate expression of their own people.
If the Hong Kongers are going to be successful here, whether that means 1) Establishing accommodation from China for true respect for "two systems," which would allow democratic rights and practices in Hong Kong, free of domination by the Chinese Communist Party, 2) Winning outright independence for Hong Kong from China, or 3) Least likely of all, a full on revolution in China resulting in democratic political reforms and a political system that is deferential to the universal human rights of its citizens, That victory is not going to be won militarily. The possibility of the Honk Kong being successful by any of these measures is no more probable than our success was expected to be of winning our independence from the British in 1776, and it may be even less so. The hopes of the people of Hong Kong will have to be realized through the exercise of 'Soft power,' not 'Hard power'. This is not impossible, but it is not clear how it might actually be achieved at this point either. Fortunately, it is somewhat likely that the events that unfold over the next five years in that region, and internationally, fall into the category of "You really cannot make this stuff up". So maybe somehow, with a little help working through the proverbial 'back-channels' and whatnot, a way can perhaps be found, as implausible as that currently appears. I hope so.
perhaps the wink and nod intended for China (by Wilbur Ross) was triggered by the below-described developments---impacting the Trump org and its business partner---in Indonesia on Tue, Fredo Trump met w Trump Organization's business partner in Indonesia, billionaire Hary Tanoesoedibjo, a media and real estate baron and vocal Trump supporter who attended the president's inauguration, in connection w the construction of a resort on the island of Bali and a golf course and resort in the forests of West Java, south of Jakarta. The Trump Organization plans to manage the resorts and has licensed the president's name for the projects. Hary's other project involves building a theme park near the Trump resort, It has been reported that both multi-billion $ projects are being financed by a Chinese state-owned bank. But Hary said on Tuesday that Chinese investment was no longer part of the deal. https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/s...ums-up-interest-in-indonesian-resort-projects
It would be very unhelpful to the HK protesters to give the impression that the US or other foreign powers are on their side. I've noted American flags, and British colonial flags, among the protests and this just feeds into Beijing's propaganda that these protests are being pushed by foreigners. It is what Chinese media is heavily reporting. The Chinese are very sensitive about the idea of foreigners intervening in Chinese affairs and especially seeking to divide the country. It has to do with the legacy of colonialism and China being carved up into spheres of influence in the 19th and 20th Century. In the case of HK it goes back to the Opium war which China was forced to hand over to the British. Also one of the conditions that the PLA could go intervene militarily in HK is in case of foreign attack.
One of the things I've noted is that for all of Trump's bluster and tariffs there still is a repeated pattern of his Admin making concessions to the Chinese coincidentally around things that benefit the Trump family.
So Trump offering to have talks with Xi about resolving the issues in Hong Kong wasn't helpful after all? https://www.npr.org/2019/08/15/7513...g-with-chinas-xi-to-resolve-hong-kong-problem
It sounds like Trump heard the negative reaction from people who interpreted his prior tweet as an offer to insert himself into the Xi-HK issue, and so followed up with another to clarify or "clarify" that he meant a personal meeting between Xi and protesters, not himself. Can you imagine Trump meeting directly and personally with his own protesters to resolve our own domestic dispute? We could come to a happy and enlightened ending to this whole white nationalism thing.
