I just came back from Omaha after eight years, does Majic 102 even play rap? I just don't remember them branching out beyond slow jam R & B when 98.5 diversified and then 97.9 came on.

I haven't been in Houston in a little while but I don't recall Magic 102 playing rap. The local R&B station in Dallas is also playing MJ tunes all weekend and I figure most R&B stations in the country will be doing the same.

102 stopped playing rap I wanna say around 93. Madd Hatta actually started there then went to 97.9 when 102 changed format.

I love it when people use MJ's death as a reference of time.

I wonder if what that has more to do with:

    1) Mass media consolidation and coordinated station play lists/marching orders
    2) Big promotional push by MJ rights owners in advance of a release
    3) Artistic and/or commercial irrelevance of contemporary R&B music

I don't. Someone sent me a text on Friday evening about it... and I just listened. I like some R&B, but I don't listen to Majic. This weekend was a special case.

I think 102 aims more for the middle-of-the-road audience, say, people in their 30's and on up is more of a target.

When I turned on Wednesday mornings and heard gospel, I thought, daaayumn. No way regular top 40 (i.e., primarily white-owned, white DJs) would give over even a morning to gospel music. No. Way.

Playing Michael Jackson all weekend goes to remind me how, two years ago, at his death, 102 and like stations celebrated MJ's life and music. Flip it to, say, 104 or even Sports Radio 610 and the perspective was very much National Enquirer, "for me, MJ died 20 years ago" sort of thing.

Guess I'm one of those in the middle. His life was sad in the end, and I would have loved for him to make a comeback, but damn! what music he made in his heyday.

I don't usually listen to 102.1, but I did jam out to some MJ & the J5 on there this weekend.
