According to the American Film Institute, these are the 100 funniest movies of all-time. It is such a sham list... I thought how wild that no Jim Carrey movies were listed, thinking maybe because some of it could be viewed as more childish or gross humor, but "There's Something About Mary" was #27. "Dumb & Dumber" not being on this list is a crime. Not to mention "Stripes". <a href="http://www.eonline.com/News/Items/0,1,6627,00.html">E! Online: Some Like it Funny... And Some Don't</a> 1. dumb and dumer was hilarious, so was stripes. But what about Kingpin ? now that was funny. ------------------ "Don't they get cable in Canada ?" Keith olbermann, after watching hakeem block terry catledge's shot 5 times.
This whole thing is too subjectve, why bother? Stop the lists! Besides, I thought Abbot and Costello, Peter Sellers, Monty Python and Jim Carrey were hideously under-represented. And Woody Allen is just waaaaaay to creepy for me to enjoy any movies of his. ------------------ Drop kick me Jesus through the goalposts of life, Tumble end over end, neither left nor right. Funniest thing i have ever seen Mango commenting in a thread about Funny Movies. Get back to being serious, your getting soft marshmallow man. Smeg ------------------ CUT Tino Isn't it amazing how quickly everyone did a Cat Backflip!!!!!
That was a terrible list. My wife and I actually did our own top 25 for fun and tomorrow we are having a mini comedy film fest for ourselves. AFI was too worried about critics and not concerned enough with what people really find funny. ------------------ "No one gets out ALIVE!" SaveOurRockets.com
Jeff, you hit the nail on the head. Some I'll agree with, but some of these movies I didn't even know were comedies! ------------------ Stay Cool...

In France Mango would be called Mangue and if he looked like Jerry Lewis he would be a hero. p.s. I'm back, not that I ever was really 'gone' (I've been up since Wednesday 9:00 p.m. mtn, but tony hawk is on the dreamcast, and I have to catch up w/ all of these new kids w/ their 50 post careers) [This message has been edited by Achebe (edited June 16, 2000).]
Surprised to see "Airplane!" way up at number 10. If "Tommy Boy" isn't on the list, why even make a list? I think the establishment has it in for Jim Carrey. How else do you explain him not even being nominated for an Academy Award for "The Truman Show", and ESPECIALLY "Man on the Moon". ------------------ Too-Rye-Aye!
I'm very happy that Blazing Saddles made it all the way to #6. If you haven't seen it in a while, rent it from the video store. Don't ever watch it on regular TV because they always cut the best parts out and dub the dirty language. To me it is the funniest movie ever made. ------------------ Bring It!!
My Personal Top 5 1. Kingpin 2. Dumb and Dumber 3. Airplane 4. There's Something About Mary 5. Fargo As you may be able to tell, I'm dying for Me, Myself, and Irene to come out. ------------------ Get your proper swirve on...visit www.swirve.com (coming in mid-June, for now visit www.eesite.com)
I believe the list only pertains to American movies (otherwise Monty Python would have been shafted big time). I would think this knocks out South Park too (Canadian). My all time favorite comedy is Life of Brian. I loved watching it until I caught just about every reference, still enyoy that movie now too. As for this list, Fast Times was way, way, too low (Sean Penn was great). So was The Jerk, and Caddyshack, no way these classics are in the second 50. Stripes is a serious omission as pointed out as well. [This message has been edited by sir scarvajal (edited June 16, 2000).]
No Cheech & Chong - Up In Smoke?? What are they smoking?!!! ------------------ We need some meat in the post!
Man, Monty Python is sadly lost in all this. And can someone please tell me why seven Cary Grant movies get squeezed in there somehow. Jim Carey, Pink Panther, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Robin Williams all being put behind yet another repetitive and slack-storied, cliche-reciped plot from Woody Allen or Mel Brooks. Funny? Yes. Funniest of all time? Well. maybe the first two or three times, but man, get a story, a plot and please call the Screen Actor's Guild and hire some different actors (Diane Keaton with Woody and Gene Wilder with Mel in yet another moveie that is ...... blah, blah, blah). ------------------
oeilpere: I like your take on things, just b/c you know movies. Try not to be too hard on Woody Allen films, though. They weren't cliched when he made them. 'Take the Money and Run', 'Play it Again Sam', 'Love and Death', 'Annie Hall' and 'Manhattan' truly are some of the greatest American comedic films of all time. But then again, the list was made by the American Film Institute. I wonder, though, why they didn't include 'Pink Flamingo(e)s' or 'Dumb & Dumber'. Is this in order? 'Some Like it Hot' is funnier than 'Good Morning Vietnam'? ------------------
Do I look like Jerry Lewis? No. A 6'2" John Denver is a much closer description Mango ------------------ Live long and prosper. Donate blood! Now...back to updating The Serious Police Files.
Again, if I am not mistaken they only rated American movies. That should excuse their Monty Python and South Park being omitted for instance, but not others of course (e.g., Stripes). ------------------ "The Rockets were ahead of the Suns by 20 late in game 2 of the series, but when the going got tough, we just Pippened . We would not be done in the series though."
That list is awful no matter how you look at it. about 15 of those movies were even funny. With maybe 5 of them being laugh out loud funny. Dumb and dumber the first time is the single greatest laugh fest ever. Anyone ever see Kentucky fried movie?
