People want to see the big names perform in the dunk contest...i think the dunks themselves can be somewhat secondary. I'm sure a Lebron-led, worse quality, dunk contest would be more entertaining and have higher ratings that a high quality no-name dunk contest

I'm not sure man. While I know the NBA is a brand business led by individuals, the most important thing for All Star games is to entertain. If the dunk contest was labeled a success the last two years with players who won't be stars most likely simply because they had great dunks, imaging what professional dunks would do for it.
I wish they would completely do away with all star week. It's just horrible. Worst week of the year in sports. The only part that I can watch is the skills competition and the three point shooting contest. Everything else is complete trash. I stopped watching the dunk contest years ago. Maybe they could raise the hoop to 12 feet. I might watch that. I think I read where they had a fashion show or something last year. Really?
I think NBA should do a tournament for those dunker who are not in the NBA and who ever wins the tournament gets to go against the NBA player who is qualified for the dunk contest.
Yeah, I really hate All Star weekend. I wish they would just play the game on Sunday and get rid of the crap on Friday and Saturday. Give the players a bit of rest. That, or come up with something actually fun to watch.
I've said for a while that NBA All Star Weekend should not be treated as PRIME TIME must-see-tv on a major network. The whole thing should be shown in lesser time slot on ESPN2 or something. On a similar level with other sports festivities, including college and high school. The whole thing especially the dunk contest has long OVERSTATED its importance. It should be minor sideshow amusement like the occasional Harlem Globetrotters game. Something there when theres nothing better to do
Don't agree, this year's contest with LaVine and Oladipo was extremely entertaining because of their skills, but they were no-names for the casual fan. Still probably rated higher than other contests with bigger names and also helped improve the image and hype for future contests.
These events are still exciting for children. The best players competing in a slam dunk contest wouldn't make it compelling. I'd rather watch a pre-season game than a dunk contest, 3 point shootout or all-star game.
Just set it up like kind of like they did the rising stars game, USA vs. World. Put 6 on each side can be any combination of players (NBA - Non-NBA), winner from each bracket competes for the trophy.
