This is definitely an embarrassing maintenance gaffe on their part, but to be fair: the reports of this expired battery and its resulting effects are a bit exaggerated, IMO.

The battery for the cockpit voice recorder (AKA the other "black box") was up-to-date and should have been functioning properly. If search crews were indeed floating right over it, they should have been able to pick up its signal.

definitely from mh370. no other 777 crashes in that area and the currents from the current search area will take debris to that island. at least we know they are searching in the right area

Would they be able to backtrace the current stream to approximate the crash location?

    That's the million dollar question...

16 months is a LONG time. So even if these pieces of wreckage are confirmed to be from MH370 (which is at least some progress and closure for the families), we're still ages away from figuring out what actually happened.

But at least we'll finally know for sure this plane didn't land in Kazakhstan, Diego Garcia or any of these other proposed theories.

PBS had a really good Nova episode on MH370 just a few days ago. I think you can stream it on the PBS website.
