paulftsk will go in the history books alongside bill russell, grant hill, yao ming, tracy mcgrady, and brandon roy. Oh, what could have been.
Sorry to hear that your tore your ACL. I am actually having ACL surgery this Wednesday at St. Lukes in Sugarland. I tore my ACL, MCL, and medial meniscus about two years ago and finally decided to get the surgery done. After the swelling went down and I got my full range of motion I started strengthening my legs at the gym twice a week. Started with the bike, then extensions/curls, and squats/lunges. I can fully run but I do not risk going full speed or sprinting. Can only really shoot around nothing else no lateral movements or rotational movements, and can only jump off the uninjured leg. If you have time get the surgery done ASAP in my opinion. Make sure you do your research about allograft, autograft, and hamstring grafts; all have their advantages and disadvantages. You should really learn about them so you and your doctor can figure out what is right for you. Good Luck!
Probably the only thing worth getting out of this thread, as there really isn't a "one size fits all" solution to this.
Can someone recommend a good knee specialist that won't charge me an arm and a leg? My knee is has been bothering me since early March when I was playing a lot of basketball. At times it feels like it could give out and it feels unstable sometimes too. No real pain though. I'm afraid I might have some damage ligaments but I don't have insurance, sigh. I wanna get it checked out by a proper doctor so I hopefully don't do more damage then already done.
I would call doctors to get their cash price if you do not have insurance. Almost always they will recommend a MRI which is pretty expensive. I know that Altus Imaging of Beltway 8 does cash MRI's from 250-400 with the MRI reading for cash pay. You should give that a shot or call around for the best deal make sure that they include the reading and report for the MRI.
Anyone has had any experience with the Athletic Orthopedics & Knee Center? I remember going there once a few years ago when I broke a bone in my hand and they charge me a lot just to get the thing wrapped up. +1 i'll check it out. thanks
they can do quick checks to see if you have a torn acl or other ligament. you probably just have tendonitis, but get it checked out!
It's been bothering me since March. Maybe even a little before then. I don't believe tendonitis would bother someone for that long. Hopefully it is just a very bad case of tendonitis.
I got jersey finger playing flag football. Couple grand for the surgery and 4 months of rehab and only 80% motion on the finger. Flag football is treacherous stuff. I think people think oh since it's not tackle guys go even harder thinking no one else is going to hurt them only to hurt themselves.
BUMP I was playing soccer last Tuesday when I sold a dummy on a guy and I took his full impact on the upper part of my calf. I fell to the ground in pain (I'm not sure if I heard a pop) but was up and able to drive home. Felt pain all night and could not bend my leg. Next day I went to the family care. The suggested RICE and prescribed some anti-inflammatory and pain killer medications. They took X-Rays and suggested nothing major. At this point, I thought it was a calf strain. I then saw an orthopedist the next day who sent me for an MRI scan. MRI results came out yesterday and apparently I have an acl tear on my right knee. I am now confused. I still have no real pain on my knee but can't bend my leg fully such that my heel touches my glutes. I still feel pain in the upper part of my calf. 1. What are the symptoms of typical ACL tear? 2. Can MRI results probably be misleading? Reason I'm asking is that medicine has also become a business and doctors could sell you on something in the hope that you have to keep going back. 3. Should I get a 2nd MRI done to confirm that it is indeed an ACL tear. Any suggestions?
Since I started playing flag football regularly 2 years ago, I've had 3 dislocated fingers (due to a-holes wearing shorts with pockets even though it's strictly against the rules....luckily refs are now suspending players with pockets for 2 games due to all the injuries) , a partially separated shoulder, bruised ribs, and a probable concussion. A lot of guys try and relive their glory days, and in the process, play like stumbling, bumbling rhinos without any caution.
I don't think MRI results can be misleading, but it's possible that the swelling and inflammation may need to go down a certain extent before they can get the most accurate read on an MRI. Sounds like they were able to clearly see a tear in yours though. Sorry, man. Sucks ass, but it ain't terminal. Keep that in perspective over the next 6 months or so on your road to recovery. Best wishes.
They can also do a test called the Lachman Test. From About.com The test places stress on the ACL. Both the amount of movement (shifting) of the shin bone, as well as the feel of the endpoint of movement (how solid the ligament feels), offer information about the ACL. Knees with a damaged ACL may demonstrate more movement and a less firm endpoint during a Lachman test. When I went to see my doc he performed this test and almost immediately said he was 100% sure my ACL was torn. I still got the MRI just to confirm. I walked around with my ACL torn for four years with very little pain before I had surgery. It's not until you start pivoting/cutting hard and feeling your knee slip out of place that you will know there is something wrong.
Geez this scares me. My knee had been bothering me for close to a couple weeks now. The pain went away but then when I was shooting around the other day, I did a step back move where I push of top separate myself and that's when it flared up again.
