The greater NY, NJ shorelines are vastly more populated than the Gulf coast.
These are basically urban densities right down to the water's edge.

New Orleans is at sea level, but it is 75 miles inland. Also the rarity of Northern storms means the infrastructure and building codes don't anticipate storms,i.e. sea walls, raised pilings or levees.

I just read that $9 billion of the $60 billion is merely to allocate funds into the flood program to pay claims. The program has been broke since Katrina.

Next in the news: Flood insurance rates to rise.

Are you suggesting the people of New Jersey and New York are sitting back doing nothing themselves? If so, saying that you are mistaken in an understatement.

The fact is that people and businesses that need their homes, offices, and buildings rebuilt are waiting on insurance. Insurance won't cover it until they are sure the Federal government is going to give the money they promised to help rebuild these states. Republican House Speaker Boehner told the governors that this money was forthcoming.

You would think that living in Texas you would have some idea of how insurance works after these things even it hadn't happened to you personally. You'd think that you knew someone who had to deal with these issues.

If you haven't, please try and do some research. This isn't about anyone sitting back doing nothing and not taking any responsibility for their situation. They were responsible enough to buy insurance for such an event. They were responsible to do everything required to maintain their payments, they've been giving of themselves to help neighbors, and make do in the meantime.

For you to start b****ing and whining about personal responsibility which isn't even applicable here is just a very strange move.

The Federal government has helped Texas after hurricanes, Florida, Louisiana, and anyplace else that has had extreme damage and loss from natural disasters.

Thank goodness that Americans for the nations entire history have not been as selfish as some of you are advocating now. This country works when we pull together rather than whine about someone who needs help.

So, the federal government will disburse money and after insurance companies pay out, the federal government will receive the money back? Sure................... That will happen.... not.

This is about people, localities, and states feeling that they are entitled to be made whole by the federal government. Know what? **** happens. Sometimes mother nature knocks you down and you have to eat a loss. That is what insurance is for. If you are not properly insured, it is not the federal government's responsibility to make you whole again.

You're an idiot. Act-of-God disaster relief is one of the primary reasons governments were created/exist in the first place and serves core functions.... It is a method of insurance.

I'll note that 26 states asked for drought aid in 2012 and at least 20 states received Federal help for wildfires. No tsunamis or major earthquakes in 2012 though.

Someone in the Republican party should turn the word "Rino" against the loons and start calling them republicans in name only. Cos denying disaster relief is libertarian not conservative.

Since you tossed an insult at me, I will respond in kind. You are a complete fool who really needs to further educate yourself. The primary reason governments came into existence was for defense.

It is the government's responsibility to provide emergency relief and assistance to its citizens.

Not to fund the rebuilding of damaged private property.

OH good. So let's do some edu-ma-cating, son.

Assuming that's even true, what kind of defense? Private defense, individual defense, self or is there another adjective that precedes "defense", perhaps one that's explicitly noted in the governing documents, and reminds me of a marginally successful PG hip hop star from a few years ago, whose name rhymes with Ramen?

Funny, so Christie, the once highly touted conservative, praises the President for his assistance and consideration during the aftermath of Sandy, and now the fall from grace.

Now it's the lusual "We are against anyone that crosses us and anything they stand for, even if it's ridiculous or something we once supported" mentality. What's even more funny is that right now, he probably IS their best bet to get back in the WH even more so now that others can see he's not a complete line towing loon, and they are railing against him. I wonder if all that will be forgotten when they realize he's their best hope to regain power in the WH, or if they will continue to wallow in delusion and put someone else up that 'doesn't really want to be president.'

I was convinced that the GOP would win the House in 2016.

    Now I'm not so sure.

BTW, all you conservatives who were shouting about job creators ought to heed your own advice. The New York metropolitian area is a crucial part of the American economy.

Gaveling the 113th congress to order today, the first piece of legislation to be brought to the floor?

    You guessed it!

    Repeal the ACA.

The 112th Congress gaveled to a close on Thursday afternoon without passing a relief package for victims of Hurricane Sandy or reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act, but Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) isn’t too concerned about finishing what Republicans had left undone. Instead, at 12:00 PM she introduced the very first piece of legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which states are now busily implementing.

The insurance company aren't going to pay without assistance from the Federal govt. Do you understand that?

People have taken the responsibility of getting themselves insured and protecting themselves are not able to get the reimbursement for their property, businesses etc. Meanwhile people are not able to work because their businesses aren't getting rebuilt.

Christie has always been a RINO and been very anti-GOP. It's nothing new. It's wealth redistribution for people with no flood coverage insurance.

Only half of New Orleans is at or above sea level.
