I'm tilling my yard. I had a fence put in last month so I know where the lines are, just not the depth.

Anyone know what the minimum depth might be? I'm reading anywhere from 18-48 inches. House was built in 1990, Tarrant county (fort worth).

Can't you have the city come out and mark the lines?

Sorry- they're marked from when I had the fence put up. I just don't know how deep.

Texas 811 is a contact point for those wishing to do excavation and similar.

Since they have already done the locate for the fence, perhaps they recorded - logged the underground lines passing through your property on your request ticket and then could tell you the minimum depth for each specific line.

Since they are big on damage prevention, they should be helpful with your followup question in regards to depth of the lines.

There is more information available if you are interested in the marking standards and color coding for underground lines. On my first look through, I didn't find anything specific on how they show the depth of the lines underground.

oops sorry, I skipped over that little bit.

I have seen them use a thin spike they shove in the ground to try and locate utilities such as clay pipe. If its power or gas, you might want to excavate.

I'm alive! I kept the tilling to an inch or so in the marked areas. Some of the hardest ground was there anyway so it all worked out. Thanks for the help.
