The title is pretty self-explanatory... Now. Considering this, after sucking the excess water out of the carpet what should I do? I've been told to remove the carpet entirely, or wait for it to dry by itself and just clean the spot with detergent... Any advice? Please Clutchfans...

Here are pics of the damage: ^^ Hard to see, but the carpet is pretty wet... Soaked most of the water out though...
Do you have homeowner's/renter's insurance? The best chance of saving the carpet would be to pull it up and hang it out in the sun (good luck with that today!) to dry. Otherwise, you'll get mold or mildew and will end up replacing it anyway, I'm guessing. But, pulling it up will be a big pain in the butt. If you have an insurer who might pay, you may want to go that route instead.
Was a lake. I dried the carpet... I'd rather prevent further damage to my carpet rather than provide Clutchfans another form of amusement...
Keep towels over the area for the next day or so until the area is pretty well dried. Clean it. If it continues to smell, remove it. If not, you should be fine. That's my $.02.
Set up a fan blowing over the wet spot. Make sure your AC is on. Make sure the AC fan is turned on all the time. Blot up what water you can with towels. Cut some spuds into french fry shapes to have with your fish.
Would pointing a fan at the wet carpet help at all? I need to dry this as quickly as possible. And pulling the carpet up would do more harm than good at this point.
Set up a fan to blow across wet area. Turn on AC. Make sure AC fan is turn on all of the time. Soak up what you can with towels. Cut spuds into french fry shapes and fry them and the fish up for dinner.
