Hey, I'm really ignorant and I don't really understand our problem ( I like to guess and stuff... but)

I'm not going to call out all the smarty pants that know what to do.

Even if I understood our problems I doubt I could come up with a solution.

When I am asked what to do I always tell people to love Jesus (hardly a good financial tip)

give to him who asks of you expecting nothing in return

sponsor kids who have little to learn baseball or let a kid into your life who doesn't have a life

tutor a child, be a big brother or big sister, send some money to feed and clothe people

    etc

    good investments

not because it makes you feel good, but because it really helps them...

Sweet Lou you have absolutely no idea what you are taking about, you just wait 5 or 6 years down the road you are going to wish you were dead when you see 20% unemployment. The bread lines of the depression will be welcomed back then. The fact of the matter is the average american worker has absolutely no set skill that truly sets him apart from a machine. A machine won't slip and sue you and raise your umbrella coverage rates. Who know how many Costco,Sam's and Walmarts alone will shed all their cashier jobs over the next decade in favor of automated machines? When other industries pick up on this you are going to have quite a large number of unskilled people who will find no jobs and their jobless benefits will run dry at some point. That leads to utter chaos the likes of which we have never seen. Sadly I am an optimist others see it even worse.

I don't really want to directly reply to zanta, but bringing up Costco is a pretty good example of a socially conscious organization that is somewhat of a counter to all his doom and gloom.

It's a very interesting case study for business models. The CEO actually strives to pay his workers more to ensure lower turnover and greater customer satisfaction. I'd argue companies like Costco that strive to maximize employee satisfaction will suffer marginally in the short term when it comes to profit but will eventually recoup those losses in the long run with increased customer and employee loyalty and a better brand image. You'll notice that the backlash on Wal-Mart is not associated with Costco even though they essentially are doing the same thing when it comes to buying and selling products.

Who wants to deal with a dumb cashier who probably didn't finish high school? Sign me up for the auto machines!!! I can't wait until the day a good virtual mall full of real-time graphics hits the world, no more worthless salesmen!!!

Atlas Shrugged will always be relevant because it is a very good critique of the strawman Left.

The problem with it is that it proposes a very bad alternative.

I must admit I read... err sang this response out loud. The initial volley of the pic with the cannons already had the song playing in my head and it was just perfect timing for this.
