I've got a friend who is going through some bad times right now, and is suffering from some really severe depression. NOT garden variety.

Anyway, I went to the clinic where this friend will be residing for the next few months, and I was surprised to hear this person tell me that they didn't have an iPod and had never downloaded any music. I remember back in the day--late eighties--that this person loved music.

I'd like to put some music on a shuffle and bring it to my friend. My problem is that I killed too many brain cells back then, and I can't for the life of me remember most of the cool songs from back in that era. Anyway, I remember my friend liking stuff like Yaz, Book of Love, Art of Noise.....etc. Stuff that wasn't too obscure, but not too mainstream either. We also hung out at a place that--although in a small town in East Texas--seemed to have some decent clubby dance music (of the time).

Can any of you guys recommend anything (that can still be found) that would match these requirements? Good dance songs, relatively happy music, not too mainstream, but not so obscure we haven't heard it? I'm open to any suggestions.

The dude's already depressed, why do you want to make it worse with 80's crap?

    I suck..........completely.

You guys gave me very good answers for the crappy way I worded my request. I was actually hoping for specific songs from bands that didn't get much radio play. Some of the songs I remember hearing at the party house were things like dance mixes of Yellow's "Oh Yeah" and Ministry's "Every Day is Halloween"

    Then we need pics.

    ----------------
No, but seriously, how about some Tiffany "I think We're Alone" or Debbie Gibson's "Only in My Dreams" or Duran Duran's "A View To A Kill"? Is the person more into Heavy Metal, Rock, or Pop? I would recommend Van Halen's "Jump" or "Dreams", Scorpions' "Big City Nights", or Quiet Riot's "c*m On Feel The Noiz".

I will come back and edit this post if I find more specific songs. I am an 80's nut... I got to the 'States in '86, and was used to listening to music I didn't even understand.

EDIT: Never mind... these were all on 93Q in the morning, and I remember John Lander waking me up to these songs. You asked for bands without much radio play, and I failed. :(

    How about:
Nitzer Ebb - Join in the Chant
OMC - Everytime I look Around
Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole

    Link to Good Mix List

Check back here tonight. I have a cassette tape of an old DV8 broadcast I'll transfer to mp3 and put out there for you. It should have something for you. Ideas at least...

You probably want to take The Cure off of that list. It's not great 'cheer up' music, especially for a clinically depressed person.

If your friend is depressed you may want to be careful with the Cure and the Smiths but they sitll have some good songs.

Bizzare Love Triangle - New Order
    Boy - Book of Love
I Touch Roses - Book of Love
    Radio Free Europe - REM
    Driver 8 - REM
    I Will Follow - U2
    In Between Days - Cure
    Boys Don't Cry - Cure
Brand New Lover - Dead or Alive
    Fall on Me - REM
Just Can't Get Enough - Depech Mode

    Of course there was also:
    Crazy Train - Ozzy Osbourne
Living After Midnight - Judas Priest
Number of the Beast - Iron Maiden

    4. Some People
    5. Saved by Zero
    6. One Thing Leads to Another
    7. The Sign of Fire
    8. Going Overboard
    9. Deeper and Deeper
    10. Are We Ourselves?

    Pole,

For some reason the group Split Enz came to my mind. And I know that they are mainstream, but I defy anyone to find other than "Let's Go", any song off the "Candy-O" album by The Cars as one that was played on mainstream radio. Granted, their debut had about every song off of it on the radio but it seemed like only "Let's Go" was on the radio from "Candy-O". One of my all-time favorite songs by them is one called "Double Life". Also, check out Van Morrison's early '80s album, "Into the Music" - absolutely brilliant.

And if you want some good dance music - can't go wrong with 2 albums by Delerium in "Karma" and "Poem".
