There's a little kid who thinks it's fun to rip cheap toys apart in the movie Toys II. Imagine what happens when he grows up? When ripping cheap toys apart becomes childish, he'd think it's of humorous satire to mock cheap toys and the toy makers. As a kid he had pennies to buy Woody, and when he grows up, he still only has pennies to buy cheap pencils with erasers that don't erase to write his masterpiece mocking Woody and Woody's maker. Mocking what one needs is like mocking himself. Sometimes mocking oneself is funny, but this time, not. It's like saying "I'm a cheap guy that needs cheap sh#t."

Pruyen, that's because of region codes. Most DVDs and DVD players in Japan, North America, Australia, and Europe have region codes embedded in them. The publishers want to be able to control what comes out where and when. As a result, DVDs (and video games) from the US don't work elsewhere. This is solved by one of the two options:
1.) Purchase domestic DVDs and video games to play on your domestic DVD player and video game console. If you have a foreign player/console, import your DVDs
2.) Purchase a region-free DVD player (doesn't work for video games).
For more information on DVD region codes, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvd_regions

Now for the other part of it...
Chinese products have always been seen as shoddy and cheap in America. The reason they're seen that way is simply because the products Americans see are cheap and shoddy. We do a LOT of trade with the Chinese, and most products made by China that are seen by Americans have little "Made in China" stickers or labels on them. These products are often found in McDonald's Happy Meals, on the shelves in the toy section of Fiesta, etc. They're shoddy and poorly made. The best quality stuff that comes over is also NOT WITHOUT PROBLEMS:
Those are three separate links to the lead paint found in toys, the toys coated in the date rape drug, and counterfeit Chinese computer chips
The belief that Chinese products suck is not going away.
Until China either starts a massive public relations campaign in the US or starts putting quality products in the mainstream market, people are going to believe they're shoddy.

Americans hate products "Made in America". American cars rust; American cloth ugly; American TV boring. Luckily there is good Asian products in America to save the people from doom and gloom.......

Of course I understand that, as I already mentioned it in my post.

The point I want to make is that with a low cost US$ 60 DVD player from Shenzhen, you can get rid of that region code restriction and play any kind of DVDs on it, whereas a US$ 400 DVD player from Panasonic could not.

And that DVD player had not yet fallen apart after a couple of years.

I don't know if its comedy doesn't translate well or people need to lighten up, probably both.

This is a satire making fun of the stereotype that Chinese products are low quality by joking about Chinese NBA players. If you are getting offended then Americans should be offended that it is stereotyping Americans as being unreliable and violent.

Often times the best way to combat a stereotype is to make fun of it.

Pryuen, there is no point in telling these stupid idiots anything. Poor quality chinese products are cheap in the States because Americans are cheap and don't want to pay for quality products. Educated americans buy quality imported cars like toyota, honda, audi, benz. Middle class americans buy hyundai, suzuki, and mazda. Idiotic americans buy chevy and ford. Majority of poor quality chinese products are sold to to these idiots. As for DVDs and electronics, Americans are brain washed by Japanese marketing that their products are better. Americans are just gullible to pay for $300 DVD players because of Copy write protection. Maybe China should consider a patent on gun powder to prevent americans kids shooting each other at schools.

    Well you know what??

In alot of the instances of the problem products that you mentioned are made by the Chinese suppliers/manufacturers per specifications/instructionsfrom foreign vendors, who sort of lack of due diligence to pick their OEM suppliers or did not spend time/resources to ensure quality assurance/control of the specs/procedures/processes of their Chinese OEM suppliers/manufacturers.

Yeah until the day the US or foreign media stop accusing the Chinese doing this and doing that, and bad-mouthing the quality of Chinese products, Chinese OEM products from original specs of US/foreign enterprises will always be considered shoddy and with their problems.

LOL! I'm sorry man. I didn't see that.
But you're right. There's nothing wrong with most Chinese products. My point doesn't change though: it's all just bad public relations. It's not all China, and it's not all US. And as a member of the US media, I can say this: we really don't have an agenda because we really don't care. We see a potential story and write it because we're under crazy deadlines and just want to finish and go home. That's pretty much it. So when products made in China are covered in roofies, well, that's pretty newsworthy.
Things just work differently here than there.

But look at it this way: China has a TON of money invested in the US. The US has a TON of money invested in China. When one grows, the other grows. I don't think that the point of view of crappy products will stay the same forever.

Damn near every major electronic device has some part or combination of parts made in China. The economy is global. teknokid, your computer consists of parts probably assembled in at least 4 countries.

Maybe you should name some ****ty products from China for us, most of these products are labeled for American companies that import them. Chinese don't buy that ****. Lets have a IQ check just for tecknokid:

    1. Do you own a Cheverolet Malibu or Ford focus?
    2. Did you eat at "Macdonald's" once a week?
    3. Do I watch more than 2 hours of TV a day?

    Answers:

    1. If Yes, You need to run to your closet and check to see if you own any products made in china....If no, you just dodge a bullet from throwing money into the toilet.
    2. If yes, you need take a vacation to China and eat some real good food. If no, at least you're not cheap
    3. If yes, you need to go to the video store and rent "last virgin in america". If no, light a cigar and chill because everything is cool.

Yup. Lemme grab a couple of other Onion headlines to give you an idea of what the people here mean when they say that The Onion makes fun of EVERYONE and EVERYTHING.
From The Onion's AMAZING September 11th coverage:

From The Onion's Hurricane Katrina coverage:

If something really is just lost in translation, that's cool. But it really isn't an anti-Chinese thing just like how Borat isn't an anti-Kazakhstan thing. It's really just satire.
