To explain why black people cant swim we turn to history professor from the university of Montana to tell us about racism . Why not turn to a lifeguard or a swim instructor from the Y ? I’m just waiting for someone to bring up the muscle mass factor . in truth it’s obvious a person can’t swim because they didn’t have swim lessons . Why that is , we can point to many different factors . Parents who swim is probably a large influence so I’m partially tongue in cheek when I riffed on the history professor . The past can always play a role . as for the present ... parents and friend groups imo are primary factors for what sports a kid is involved in. As for the future , hopefully the black people that were taught to swim in the last 10-20 years will continue to get their kids and families and friends involved in swimming . It’s something that everyone should know how to do and it can be one of the simple joys in life . oh and it’s never too late to learn .
I had an interesting convo with a black assembler I hired to assemble a riding lawnmower jack stand this morning. The guy was naturally gifted at putting things together and assembled my product fast and he was a military vet, the guy started telling me stories Like many vets like to do about his military experience regarding why he chose the marines Over other branches of service- I thought great I gotta go please keep it short in my head lol and He naturally always wanted to find a better way to do something, ..and how this didn’t sit well with the Sargent at first because it didn’t fit with the typical mold of new recruits until his tinkering helped develop systems that helped fight terror. We also talked about Knife fighting and how he would counter a knife strike , not sure how that topic started but this dude showed me how he would block and go in with a elbow strike, to which I said I’m not messing with you haha , we also talked his business and the fact I am self employed as well and How he’s doing with the corona virus to which he said it’s all political but rather not go into not which I agreed ...interesting convo. The way this relates to water is you have to have an interest then you develop the skill. It’s similar to why whites can’t be running backs or jump well at hoops, it’s just a matter of interest and following thru and we all can get a piece of the water pie or whatever the pie happens to be
no . My point was that the past has significance , but it’s not like there aren’t black people that swim . Many factors are at play from the history and racism to the present day options and competing sports. I worked at a pool as a lifeguard / swim instructor for about 10 years . I taught many black students and had black coworkers too . To us , black people cant swim was a stereotype and a joke . It has some truth to it like many stereotypes, but it’s also absurd on its face value given that black people CAN swim . I just wanted to respond to the swimming thread lol
You asked a question and I gave an answer . The opportunities to swim is not easily accessible to many people right now, and the ones that do are available fairly based on income such as the one in my hometown
No I’m discussing but you want to get up from your chair, toss your chocolate milk across the room and have a hissy fit and stomp out instead of a civil discussion with those that may not share your viewpoints. This thread makes no valid point and is kinda nauseating .
When did I stomp out? What do you think my viewpoint is? I just thought this was an interesting topic about where the stereotype came from because I could all ways swim and so could most of my friends. If it is nauseating why are you still posting?
not just African Americans. Lots of ethnicities never learn to swim. Indians for example. Its not an incredibly important skill.
When you post this “So you were just throwing **** against the wall.“ yea that’s exactly what I did. Now explain how I did that or eat ****
Do you not know what stomping out means? I'm still here. I asked you how those people were supposed to have access to pools and you posted that link with no idea of where they are located and if they actually have pools. So you ignored everything the video said and you linked to one summer camp in a very specific area.
