The mayor of Atlanta tested positive yesterday. She had not shown any symptoms of the respiratory illness, saying that she was "shocked" after testing positive to COVID-19. Ms Bottoms complained of a mild headache and cough, which she attributed to seasonal allergies. She said that she and her family wear masks in public and are careful about washing hands and maintaining social distancing.

Texas coronavirus cases cross 200,000 mark

    Austin American-Statesman

Texas reached 200,000 total COVID-19 cases Monday, just 17 days after crossing the 100,000 threshold, a figure that took the state nearly four months to hit. The number of cases and hospitalizations has accelerated since Memorial Day, prompting Abbott to close bars, reduce restaurant occupancy, pause additional reopenings and issue a statewide order to wear a face covering in counties with more than 20 COVID-19 cases.

Total coronavirus cases exceed 15,000 in San Antonio; two more deaths reported

    San Antonio Express-News

The number of coronavirus cases in Bexar County continued to lurch upward Monday, with 351 new infections and two more deaths reported. That brings the total number of local residents who have tested positive for the virus since mid-March to 15,102. Little more than a third — 5,830 — have recovered, while 1,168 patients are hospitalized here, the highest number yet. That’s up from 881 patients in local hospitals a week ago.

Dallas County reports 1,214 coronavirus cases as total deaths surpass 400, hospitalizations surge

    Dallas Morning News

Dallas County Health and Human Services reported a record high of 1,214 new coronavirus cases and six deaths Monday as the county saw its largest one-day jump in hospitalizations. The new numbers bring the county’s total to 27,054 cases and 401 deaths. The number of confirmed cases — 10.3 for every 1,000 residents — has now surpassed 1% of the county’s population.

Texas COVID-19 hospitalizations more than double in the last two weeks

    Associated Press

Texas surged past 8,000 statewide hospitalizations for the first time over the Fourth of July weekend — a more than quadruple increase in the past month. State health officials reported Monday that more than 12,000 beds remained available throughout Texas but the numbers differ locally.

More hospitalizations bring Austin-Travis County to the brink of shutdown again

    KVUE-TV Austin

On Monday, the seven-day average of daily COVID-19 hospitalizations in Austin-Travis County jumped to 64.6. On Sunday, that number was at 61.6. If it reaches 70, Austin-Travis County's COVID-19 risk guidelines say non-essential businesses will be shut down again. Austin Mayor Steve Adler expressed his concerns over ICU capacity for COVID-19 patients, saying he believes Austin and Travis County will reach capacity within 10 days.

CC State-Supported Living Center sees COVID-19 case spike

    KRIS -TV Corpus Christi

The Corpus Christi State Supported Living Center is another hot-spot of positive COVID-19 cases. Previously, the center had reported 44 cases and, currently, the Nueces Co.-Corpus Christi Public Health District says the center now has 103 cases: 66 employees and 37 residents.

‘No Good Options’: As COVID-19 Surges in the South and Sun Belt, Testing for Nursing Homes Lags Behind

    Skilled Nursing News

Texas and Arizona have emerged as new potential COVID-19 hotspots in the latter half of June, but despite widespread knowledge of the danger to elderly residents, nursing facilities in those states still face hurdles in securing testing and timely results. New COVID-19 cases in Texas have climbed significantly since mid-June. But as cases in the state surge, a one-time testing push is not going to be sufficient. Even a biweekly testing initiative wouldn’t do the job.

Gov. Abbott warns of ‘greater fatalities’ from COVID-19 in Texas' coming weeks

    Houston Chronicle

Gov. Abbott is warning of even “greater fatalities” from COVID-19 as the number of people in hospitals with lab-confirmed cases hit a record 8,698 on Monday. Over the last 7 days, Texas has averaged 36 coronavirus deaths per day. That is up from a week ago when the state averaged 30 people dying per day from the disease. Abbott said many of the people dying now likely contracted the disease back in late May.

Nearly a decade after lawsuit, Texas Foster Care still putting children in danger; motion filed against state

    KVUE-TV Austin

Nearly a decade after a lawsuit was filed against the State of Texas for failing to protect the safety of children in foster care, on Friday, plaintiffs for the children filed a contempt motion to address the “glaring safety risks” in the system. This is evident from the deaths of three children in long-term care this year, in addition to numerous other reports of abuse, neglect, backlogs and under-reporting.

Evidence growing that Houston's main coronavirus strain is more contagious than original

    Houston Chronicle

Evidence is growing that a mutated coronavirus strain, the main one circulating in the Houston area, is more contagious than the original virus in China. Two new research papers show that the newer strain is more transmissible. Joseph Petrosino, of Baylor College of Medicine, said that although Baylor hasn’t yet conducted a surveillance study, the area rate of positive tests and increase in hospitalizations point to a significantly higher prevalence of the virus strain now.

Scientists urge WHO to address airborne spread of coronavirus

    Washington Post

More than 200 scientists from over 30 countries are urging WHO take more seriously the possibility of the airborne spread of COVID-19 as case numbers rise around the world. In a forthcoming paper, 239 signatories attempt to raise awareness about what they say is growing evidence that the virus can spread indoors through aerosols that linger in the air and can be infectious even in smaller quantities than previously thought.

    From 6/2:

Screw the coronavirus update. It’s dead anyway (I’ll do it next week, if anything is left standing). Instead, I bring you the Rape of America, orchestrated, cheered, supported, endorsed and funded by our leaders, academics, media, and so-called elites.

Keep an eye out for the latest anti-mask rhetoric. That wearing masks cause pleurisy, an infection of the lining of the lungs.

GOP State Lawmaker Demands Americans ‘STOP GETTING TESTED’ For Coronavirus
    Lee Moran
    [IMG]July 8, 2020, 4:59 AM EDT

A GOP state lawmaker in Ohio ― one of several states currently seeing a spike in new coronavirus infections ― urged constituents to “STOP GETTING TESTED” for COVID-19 in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

“Are you tired of living in a dictatorship yet?” asked Nino Vitale, who serves in the state’s House of Representatives. Testing for COVID-19 gave “the government an excuse to claim something is happening that is not happening at the magnitude they say it is happening,” he claimed.

“Have you noticed they never talk about deaths anymore, just cases?” Vitale added. “And they never talk about recoveries. They just keep adding to numbers they have been feeding us from over 3 months ago!”

The lawmaker shared a graphic detailing where in the state it will be mandatory from Wednesday to wear masks to mitigate the spread of the contagion:

Vitale in May said he would not wear a mask ― a measure endorsed and promoted by public health experts worldwide —because the face is the “image and likeness of God.”

Last week, he wrote on Facebook that “the only people I know” in history “that wear masks are those trying to get away with a crime. And this entire mask deal is simply that, a crime against freedom and a crime against humanity.”
