Change the logo, change the context:

    upload_2020-7-4_12-0-39.png

Keep the name, and everybody can call them the Washington Spuds. Everybody happy all around.

The word oklahoma means 'red people' . Do we need to change the state's name or no?

But don't let the truth get in the way of trying to prove your point.

yeah I read that and they convinced me of the actual meaning of oklahoma as "honorable group" or whatever but i think it's pretty well factual to say the literal translation is red people.

either way it's totally stolen land so screw Ok

Regardless of the meaning, the name was recommended by the Native Americans back in the 1800s.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma

The state's name is derived from the Choctaw words okla and humma, meaning "red people".

Wikipedia says you are wrong, but i don't speak Choctaw so who knows.

    Also, choctaw site

Correct , native Americans called themselves red people. Kind of relavent. History matters. Kind of like how chinaman is an offensive term but Irishman isnt.

Yeah I don't speak it either. Which is why I literally posted from someone that does speak Choctaw. Laid out a pretty good argument as well.

Got it. You'd be cool with them changing their team name to Washington Red People.

ur under-informed, underscoring your ignorance of American history, unable to differentiate Chineseman and the disparaging term about the Chinese.

    yes, history matters.

in the mid-1800s, during the trans-continental railroad building days in the USA, the Chinese workers were disparaged for not able to speak English.

instead of referring to them as Chineseman (in the same vein as Englishman, Irishman,Frenchman, Dutchman)
    the disparaging term was used

This is one of the issues that obviously isn't the most pressing issue facing the country but it seems like just plain decency to change a name that many people find offensive. I and others here went to Lamar High School and when I went Lamar was still the Redskins, including the with the same logo as the DC team and even had a Chief Wahoo type character as a mascot. Lamar dropped that name a few years ago and I doubt many of us when went feel less about our high school experience.

In the early 70's Stanford University dropped the name "Cardinal Indians" to just "Cardinal". The name change certainly hasn't affected Stanford's academic reputation, endowment or athletic success.

While certainly there are old school fans that care about the DC team name but I'm guessing they will care a lot more about on field success than what the team is called.

Dude. It’s the name AND logo thats the problem. Sensibilities change over time. It doesn’t matter what Oklahoma may or not mean. “Redskins” and its logo are racist. Blackface used to be acceptable for many, now its not. Using the term “Negro” has faded as have “Colored”.

It is like certain White people don’t want to changed things because of some misguided attempt to hang on to History, nostalgia, and POWER as their grip on the Majority loosens everything day. In 20-30 years, Minorities as a group will outnumber whites. They can frame as “culture wars”, but it is really fear that when Whites become the minority. The fear that the “chickens coming home to roost” is what awaits.
