If you could insert one Rockets player from the past on the current team, who would it be and why?

Which past Rockets player would make the most impact towards the goal of contending and winning it all?

    RULES

-No All-Star or higher level players allowed.

My choice? Simple. Give me Shane Battier or Ron Artest. Doesn't matter which.

Why? Both players fit our style, play defense, hit the outside ball, fill the 3/4 and maybe even spot minutes at the 5.

Battier gives you more IQ. Artest gives you more grit/aggression (and likely more laughs). As fore-mentioned, give me either.

    Go.

I thought of Shane Battier as soon as I read the title.

Battier. Artest is a good choice, but too volatile. You can count on Battier not to get 2 techs in a crucial game.

I'll bet Morey would pick Battier as well. For almost-Rockets, he'd go with Bosh.

Robert Horry - length, athleticism, shooting and most importantly, clutch.

Agree for this team, I would probably do the same. Battier is very close behind him for me

I'd honestly just bring CC back. Don't care if we could only play him with Harden-on, Russ-off lineups. We desperately need size, rebounding and shot-blocking. Plus his chemistry with Harden was on point and so fun to watch.

The default go to is probably a starter wing/forward. Since current make up is small ball, and players that can space the floor.

If going by Rocket's best season for 3pt %, we get the below.

3-Pt Field Goal Pct for Rocket's season.
    1. Jon Barry2004-05 .451
    2. Matt Bullard1999-00 .446
    3. Luther Head2006-07 .441. <<- stat line wise he had a .564 eFG that year.
    4. Kenny Smith1992-93 .438
    5. Michael Dickerson1998-99 .433
    6. Kenny Smith1994-95 .429
    7. Walt Williams2001-02 .426
    8. Shane Battier2006-07 .421
    9. Mario Elie1996-97 .420
    10. Matt Bullard1997-98

In an else-world if floor spacing didn't matter, I'd opt in a Luis Scola or Chuck Hayes. Chuck still has all time Rocket Seasons's best Defensive box +/- (2007-08).

Final vote, still Battier, since he can snipe from the three, and play position-less D.

Scola definitely crossed my mind. Resembling a Jokic-lite type player, IMO. High IQ, hustler, post-playmaker, rebounder, and can shoot.

I would throw a younger Ariza in the mix.

I immediately thought of Battier as well. Consummate professional. Even if he sucked at basketball I'd want him in the locker room. Lol

The Rockets need a player that is a very good defender that can defend inside, get out in transition and finish and hit open shots from outside.

That player is Robert Horry. He would fit almost all of the Rockets needs and would be able to play the 5 with ease.

Other players I would consider is the obvious Shane Battier...... Ron Artest. I would take Artest over Battier because he was just a better player.

Lesser discussed guys......Marcus Morris, Sam Cassell, Lewis Lloyd and Cedric Maxwell... M-Bah Moute... Trevor Ariza..... Rudy T

The player that is a "sleeper" that I believe would help the Rockets a whole lot is Jim Jackson.

Jackson was a very physical player at 6'6", 220 lbs with a 7'0" wingspan. By the time he reached the Rockets, he was an elite defender that was physical and played hard every single possession. He could guard multiple positions and had a high basketball IQ. He was a very good 3 point shooter and would take them in high volume. He would be a perfect small 4 now.

Oh man, Artest, Battier, Horry or Ariza (in that order) would be my first picks.
