I could move off from non-fiction to novels (The Plot Against America was fantastic) if yall have any solid recs. So far I've got:

Boy's Life
Blood Meridian (****ing finally)

Anything good by Stephen King in the last 20 years? I especially like his short story collections but I haven't read anything from him in ages.

 

He has a new 4 story Novella collection called "If It Bleeds....". One of the stories involves the Mr. Mercedes series. (If you saw The Outsider series it focuses on the Holly character).

Doctor Sleep - sequel to The Shining was pretty good. 11/22/63 was good.

The Bazaar of Bad Dreams is a short story collection.z

Have you read The Dark Tower series?

Didn't like the movie, my brother didn't like the book.

Read maybe half or more, one rainy week at San Saba because somebody else had it there, (I forgot that when I said I hadn't read anything of his in years), not that impressed. Everything about death and the afterlife and such, a couple of stories were really good, especially the one about the 2 old guys and the dog at the end of the nuclear holocaust.

Yes. Still hoping for HBO to do a proper Game of Thrones type series.

eta: I've got this in reserve, figure I owe to my granddad to read it, Halberstam was a great journalist/author

Spoonbenders by Daryl Gregory was good
Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell as well as the sequel Children of God I highly recommend

I'll check it out. Sounds a bit like Graham Greene. Ever read The Power and the Glory or any of his others?

His latest book, If it Bleeds is 4 stories and is pretty good
The Outsider was good but maybe worthless if you watched the series.
The Institute is pretty good
I also liked Joyland
I wasn’t a huge fan of his trilogy starting with Mr. Mercedes but lots of people enjoyed those books

I'll second bobrek's recommendation. I read both a while back and were very memorable and engrossing.

 

And painful...

 

My problem is that I cannot do Kindle and such, I've tried. I need them in my hands, actual damn books.

 

I suggest checking out Mein Kampf and Art of the Deal. Both by two great men that are unique in their own ways but not all that dissimilar.

Solzhenitsyn, Gulag Archipeligo, is a great book. You should also read The Orphan Master's Son.

I am devastated to hear Carlos Ruiz Zafon died. Shadow of the Wind is one my favorite books of all time, and I was in awe of his prose. I wish I could approach his mastery one day myself. I got to hear him speak in Seattle, and he was just as eloquent orally and he was to the written word. The literary world lost a true titan today.

 

larsons books read like novels but are super well researched and are non fiction essentially.

both devil in the white city and garden of beasts are so good

i still need to check out a few of his others.

 

Isaac’s Storm is awesome about the Galveston hurricane

 

isn't there one about that ship...think thunderstruck was the title. i need to check a few more of them out.
