Atascocita is tough. I've heard lots of people from out of town butcher it. Fuqua seem like it should be easy, but people not from here dont want to try, because they all want to pronounce it "f**k-wa", and they dont want to say that first bit in polite company.
Many young whipper-snappers today mispronounce the word "tour" (like a band going on tour). They say "tore" ( tȯr ) instead of "tour" ( tu̇r ). Radio DJs make this mistake a LOT. Once you hear it, you can't un-hear it.
At some point in time widespread mispronunciation made "tȯrnament" acceptable. It used to only be "tu̇rnament."
I think they're relating it to the word "your". Like... if "your" is pronounced ( yȯr ), then "tour" should be pronounced ( tȯr ).....This is an example of two things: 1, The English language is occasionally inconsistent. 2. Mispronunciation and errors in grammar and syntax are rampant, especially among whipper-snappers.
The worst I hear is "jaguar" being pronounced "jagwire" ... sweet mother, just look at the damn word.
"wheelbarrow" vs "wheelbarrel" "A whole 'nother." What the hell? Are you trying to say "another," "a whole other", or "a whole another?" What is "a whole another?"
I've been called an android, and other unsavory things, but a "dirty dog?" I'll have you know that I take a shower every day! Sometimes I soak in a tub and take a shower, and certainly one or the other before embarking on extracurricular activities, as does my S.O., so there.
