For everyone hating on the financials of the deal, this is what it would’ve cost to sign the top FA OT, it’s not cheap. The total costs of the deal is an overpay, but this extension is what the market was moving to.
Great news to wake up to from my quarantine slumber nap. Working on Watson’s deal now. So that’s why we couldn’t give Hopkins more money. I’m okay with this now. Round 2 draft soon... it’s a good day in my book.
That's fair, so can we have our two 1st round picks back? But I get your point, the two firsts were a sunk cost. That is the price you pay when you are not confident that you can attract top FA talent, and desperate to protect the backside of your star QB.
How many times have the Texans signed a player at a premier position to a monster deal and did it ever work out? It is the price you pay and it's a price most teams have to face. They got their man in King Tunsil. It's not an all world ender.
I don’t think the problem was at the time attracting FAs or that the original deal was an overpay(Clowney and a 1st). The problem, which it has been for years now, is O’Brien and his lack of ability to be even a below average GM and how to handle anything.
I dont care as much about the money but I'm still salty about the 2 1st round picks. The negative reaction is culmative. I thought they gave up too much for Duke and Tunsil and didnt get enough for Clowney and Hopkins. These decisions are tied together and it is hard to get excited about one without thinking about how they got to where they are.
I agree with the entirety of the deal, it was bad all around. But the Tunsil contract in a vacuum isn’t a bad deal, it’s a market value deal
Multiple firsts and a significant overpay for a good not great tackle. When you have a person not equipped for a job this happens.
Tunsil had Bill O’Brien by the balls. What else could Bill do? O’Brien had zero leverage in this negotiation.
Shh dont tell scarface that. Hes right now too happy jerkin himself off on how "skilled" BoB was to extend tunsil.
What makes you think he’s a good but not great tackle? I don’t know if you can name 5 LT’s (or any OT’s for that matter) better than him. If I’m remembering correctly, he had the highest pass blocking grade for PFF in 2019 of any OT’s (Or maybe just LT). Anyway, he’s elite. Not just good.
multiple first for him, so tough to swallow, especially when we traded the best Wide receiver for jack sht.
