Luther was always kind of messy plot wise but in a good way, they leaned to far into the outlandish IMO. The super hero team up was a bridge too far IMO. I like Sherlock but I don't think it fits in this category, but yea technically it is a crime drama.
Sounds like I missed that. I'm thinking now I never saw S04 ... which was supposed to be the last, iirc. I somewhat got mad with S05 (2019), which I just saw, because the serial-killer plot was so good, yet they wasted half the air time on other plots. They ruined a unique plot by trying to close long arcs from seasons 4-5 years ago ... that didn't need any work done to them. grrrr
The team up was him and the original protaganist. Yeah I think that was an issue trying to tie everything up at the end.
I didn't know about the show. Now I'm definitely interested in checking it out. Thanks, Deckard! This theme by Barrington Pheloung always gives me the feeling that Morse was a soul who's aloof and lonely.
The Missing is coo, recommended once by the meh-poster, @moestavern - RIP. And Giri/Haji which includes some Japanese flavor. Both are really good, but hardly tier 1 Breaking Bad level shows or anything.
So Morse on Endeavor is young Inspector Morse? That will be interesting once I start watching the other show IM. Just took a look at the endeavor Wiki and it seems I missed the 1st 2 series. Need to go back and watch.
Strongly second the recs for Happy Valley and Broadchurch. Both are fantastic. the Stranger was decent but dragged a bit in the middle and not nearly as good as the two above
Add me to Happy Valley list. Extremely well done, and the casting of the main character was perfect. I am also a huge Luther fan. Alice is one of my favorite characters. Hoping they come back for another season. A few others worth checking out: River (awesome show with two great performances), Paranoid (Luther's wife plays the lead). Bordertown (Finland). The Fall (Ireland... Gillian Anderson, schwing but it takes a few episodes to adapt to the really strong Irish brogue). Hinterland (Wales). Hotel Beau Sejour (Belgium... quirky show, girl investigates her own murder). I really enjoy watching foreign crime shows.
I think I enjoy it more than the original Morse. It being set in the stylish 60's certainly doesn't hurt. And the actor who plays Young Strange is a Dead Ringer for Old Strange.
While not british, it feels very britishy--I'd recommend the Phrynne Fisher mysteries. Very pulpy and period, with lots of sex appeal.
Not crime, but I would highly recommend these BBC espionage miniseries: The Game; The Night Manager; London Spy; and The Little Drummer Girl
Harlen Coben's 'The Five' and his second series 'The Stranger' are some of the best british crime dramas I've watched in recent years. This guy knows how to write.
I watched River overall an interesting series and some great acting 1st 3 episodes are great but IMO it runs out of steam at the end. Only 6 episodes so it's worth the investment. I watched the first series of the Fall and have not started the 2nd will eventually finish but not that impressed.
