He blew the whistle to protect his crew. This isn't an ordinary flu, it's a fast moving killer virus that would take down the whole ship in days. He probably knew what he was doing and violate it anyway to protect his crew. Sometime you do the right thing and accept the punishment afterward. That's a hero and that's why his crew showed love for him.

I don't think he leaked the letter, or sent it outside his CoC to get more attention. I think he cared about his sailors but the reality is without a letter, he was not on the record with his views. You either write a letter or you are complicit. People are trying as hard as they can to make this a #resist moment against trump or some other entity they hate (navy, military, men in general) but it isn't like that.

This is war time only the enemy is the virus.
He was fighting the right war and did the right thing: saving lives.
Yes, he is a hero and should not be punished.

Captain Winters would have done the same for his men. Captain Trump calls a rescue for himself ,then calls an air strike on the ship.

Unfortunately this is the bigger issue that most dont understand....

But at the same time he understood his decision and sacrificed himself for his crew... I have the utmost respect for him...

This is the one part that I don't agree with you on....

We dont know if he did or didn't.... that's all assumption and you sound prior military... If so you know how assumption is broken down in the military... It's the mother of all F'ups...

He did mess up and I think he done it on purpose... he sacrificed himself for his crew...

Violating what now? Rules are great and all, until people start focusing on what the rule says, instead of what actually makes sense.

Maybe I need a drink or five, but I thought the captain they fired was Morgan.

"likely compromised his ship's position" lulz

did you follow the story? The Navy reported the carrier and its CSG was at Guam since March 26th, after reporting community spread on March 24th.

First, the carrier was the flagship of a Carrier Strike Group (CSG-9). Nimitz-class carriers are never alone.

It was fully protected by: public.navy.mil deployment announcement
    • Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 11
    • Ticonderoga class guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill (CG 52),
    • Destroyer Squadron 23,
    • Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers
      • USS Russell (DDG 59),
      • USS Paul Hamilton (DDG 60),
      • USS Pinckney (DDG 91),
      • USS Kidd (DDG 100) and
      • USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115)
Second, it's impossible to hide a carrier, let alone the entire CSG-9's, position from satelites

Third, on March 24th, Navy announced to the public the ship's position and status, by reporting there 8 sailors infected with community spread, and it was going to Guam.
Fourth, on March 26th, the Navy reported (at news.usni.org) the carrier was at Guam and quaratining sailors on land

Fifth, again, this March 30th usni.gov report lists the entire CSG at Guam (ships listed above are listed again here)
@Commodore it's OK to agree with the firing ... I was in the military. I can be talked into agreeing, too. But, please don't say Carrier Strike Group 9 was dangerously vulnerable or its location exposed.

He wasn't fired for violating a rule. He was fired for violating a rule that unintentially made the Navy look bad from a PR perspective.
