I'm going to give a plug for Kuala Lumper. It is a almost as modern as Singapore and you can get a lot of the same great food as Singapore but much less expensive. It's also more laid back. There are some great sites such as Batu Caves. Malaysia for all of it's progress is still has very socially conservative and ethnic supremacist element to it's government.
Imagine an office-like reality show where a dude gets nagged by a harem of 99 women. Jay Z can co-produce. Someone get me on the phone with Al Jazeera!
I haven't watched the video yet but that is the heart of it. Malaysia has an institution called Bhumiputra, which is essentially benefits and set aside for ethnic Malays. Chinese are the minority in what was Malaya but they have played a large role in the economy. Malaysia's system is meant to prevent the Chinese from dominating the economy. The Malaysian Federation didn't originally want to take Singapore because it was majority Chinese and Lee Kuan Yew and his followers already didn't want the Bhumiputra standards. The British compelled the Malaysian Federation to include Singapore but that marriage didn't last. Also at the time 1965 Singapore wasn't the Singapore we think of. It was lagging countries like Burma and Philippines in development. When Malaysia kicked out Singapore many figured Singapore would end up much worse than Malaysia as there were almost no natural resources and Singapore would have to depend on it's neighbors Malaysia and Indonesia to survive with neither country very fond of Lee Kuan Yew and his party. It's a testament to the Singaporeans that they've became what they were. Even with Singapore's success Malaysia doesn't regret kicking them out.
