First people compared it to the flu. Now this. Stop trying to compare it to things. It isn't the same.

The bottom line - Tilman owns shitty restaurants and sleazy casinos. He's just a business owner. Not a doctor. Not a viral disease expert. He is not at all qualified to speak out about serious health issues in any way.

In this instance he needs to just shut up and listen to the experts.

I was on the frontlines for H1N1. This is likely going to be worse when all is said and done. How much worse? Best case is that it is "only" as bad as H1N1. Worst case is.... not something anyone is ready to consider at this point. Just see what's going on in Italy if you want to see what downplaying this will get you.

Seriously? You are believing tabloids on line lmao? There is ZERO proof anyone from Iran said yep we are digging mass graves over here. They are satellite images to which assholes decided to add oh look Iran is digging mass graves. The media is doing an amazing job at creating mass panic for the masses.

Until this **** mutates or starts killing off younger healthy people it's doing exactly what the flu does. Most people have reported mid to mild cold or flu like symptoms. Stop listening to the damn media and pay attention to the actual victims. The dude in Philadelphia had a great point when he said the media and hype is more impactful than the virus which he had.

We will all end up with this **** and like the flu if your not very elderly or have weak immune systems you will be fine. I hope people don't get it. I hope people don't get the flu but the ****ing panic is ridiculous.

Best case scenario is that it is 10 times more deadly than the flu. You guys just need to look to Italy to see if the fear is justified or not. If we don't practice social distancing now, we will be too late.

If you're into history, read about cities that practiced social distancing during Spanish Flu vs. those that didn't. Mortality was 3-4 fold lower in cities that "panicked" and shut down theaters, schools, etc...

    Edit: www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-51852320

Worth considering why this has experts spooked - flu does not do this.

it has not been more deadly than the flu they're worried about its contagion rate which I understand the panic that is ensuing is ridiculous though. People are not paying close enough attention to the people that are actually affected the younger people not the very elderly or the already sick and what they are saying. it's not killing them hell some of them don't even go to the damn hospital because they're only reporting cold like symptoms and then their fine. I mean look at the end of the day people are going to handle this how they want to handle it if people want to assume it's the end of the world so be it everybody's entitled to live it how they want to live it I personally think the panic is a little f****** nuts that's just me that being said I hope nobody on the border their families gets it

Italy has a 6% mortality rate. Overall it's been about 3%. Do you know what seasonal flu is? 0.01-0.05%.

What are your qualifications to downplay this, other than fear?

Ferntits is not as bad of an owner as people make him out to be. That said, he is a loudmouth, egotistical, jerk. I would HATE to work for him.

I don't understand why "people are overreacting" and "the coronavirus is really serious" can't both be true. I heard the Cotsco nearby my house had over 500 people lined up when they opened yesterday buying just about everything up in a short period of time. I'm sure most/all of those people believe this is really serious but their overreaction is in some ways exacerbating the issue. What is the point of stocking up to practice social distancing if 500+ people at a time are flooding the same space, literally walking down the exact same aisle breathing each other's air? It defeats the purpose of the whole exercise.

I also believe there is some truth to both the "mortality rates show this is akin to other recent viruses that people didn't freak out about" and "this is 10x worse than a bad flu season" mentalities. The poster above who referenced Italy is absolutely spot on in their assessment - the real killer here is that in Italy because they didn't take it seriously the contagion caused a run on critical medical supplies/facilities meaning patients who otherwise would have been given medical care are perishing without it in addition to the already vulnerable parts of the population. Lack of adequate testing to identify the problem(ticking time bomb here in the US by the way), lack of beds for the effected, lack of trained staff to effectively practice the critical care - this is where the mortality rate jumped and those logistical reasons are why.

....so lets' just agree that there is a lot of nuance here and stop looking at the world in black and white terms.

A little more nuance - if you want to see WHEN the mortality rate began to tick upward in Italy, it was when they ran out of beds. We have fewer beds per capita than Italy. Italy isn't some third world country. That is the reason that social distancing is so important. You are not likely going to limit the number of infections - but you can slow the rate of infections so that mortality remains contained to lower figures.

At the same time, people are engaging in their own worst impulses too. The toilet paper hoarding is just nonsensical and insane. Probably a good time to switch to bidets permanently lol. But the hoarding of masks, cleaning supplies, hand sanitizer, that is out of hand. What people haven't realized is you can clean your hands all you want! But if someone else can't and passes it to you, you are still screwed. If this is what people mean by "don't panic," I 100% agree. If they mean "Y THEY CANCEL NBA", then I refer to the paragraph above.

He didn't say anything about not taking it seriously. He just quoted current facts.

He described anecdotal information based on what's happened so far in the U.S. The U.S. has low quality data because we have barely tested anyone. Italy and Korea are the best models for how the disease can spread if handled poorly.

I think the US has learned from the mistakes of other countries over the past week. Shutting all sports down was a quicker than expected response.

Korea has actually done a remarkable job. Taiwan and Singapore, too. Not too late for us to buckle up and get down to business.
