If march madness is postponed / canceled I'm gonna cancel the trip. That was the whole purpose of going in the first place.

Yeah, quite the opposite. Italy really ignored the growing threat and wasn't testing very much once it was very clear the virus was really embedded into the population.

Italy also has some cultural differences: a lot of big gatherings, lots of hugs and kisses, lots of laid back hygiene thoughts (people aren't germaphobes, its not a big deal to bathe every single day, etc.

They also have an incredibly old population which has been proven to big kicked hard by this virus. Additionally, despite having a modern medical system, they have a very poor health care worker to population ratio due to their government basically underpaying medical professionals for decades...so they are getting slammed by the surge.

What would the difference be in paying for premium than what's offered for free?

People go to Vegas to watch and gamble. It's an event of its own. But yeah, that tourney is NOT going to happen. Every university involved might be suspending (or moving to remote classes) all operations period. Not just athletics.

I was talking about actual testing, but I realize now you are talking about development. I don't know how R&D work, but your guess makes sense.

All of this is confusing as heck

    https://www.propublica.org/article/cdc-coronavirus-covid-19-test

Update, Feb. 29, 2020: On Saturday, the FDA announced an “accelerated policy … to achieve more rapid testing capacity in the United States,” allowing academic hospital labs capable of performing high-quality testing to develop and begin using their own tests to detect COVID-19. Before now, hospital labs weren’t sent test kits by the CDC and the FDA required an extensive review process even if the hospitals had internally validated their tests. Under the new policy, the FDA review will still be required, but labs will be able to start using their diagnostics once they are internally validated. On Saturday, officials in Oregon and Washington state said they had found new cases of COVID-19 that appeared to be instances of “community spread,” where the source of infection is unknown.

    https://www.fiercebiotech.com/medte...-testing-outside-cdc-and-before-agency-review

To broaden capacity and access to coronavirus diagnostics in the U.S., the FDA issued a new policy over the weekend allowing “high-complexity” laboratories—such as certain academic medical centers and other institutions—to develop and operate their own tests.

The policy authorizes CLIA-certified laboratories to immediately field molecular diagnostic tests validated for the disease, known as COVID-19, before any agency review or approval of requests for an official Emergency Use Authorization.

“We believe this policy strikes the right balance during this public health emergency,” FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn said in an agency statement. “We will continue to help to ensure sound science prior to clinical testing and follow-up with the critical independent review from the FDA, while quickly expanding testing capabilities in the U.S.”

“We are not changing our standards for issuing Emergency Use Authorizations,” Hahn added. “This action today reflects our public health commitment to addressing critical public health needs and rapidly responding and adapting to this dynamic and evolving situation.”

    ...

“[The FDA’s] step may reduce development costs, speed the process for availability at more testing sites, incentivize private development and, ultimately, help save lives,” said Rick Bright, director of the U.S. government’s Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority.

“At BARDA, we are identifying industry partners to develop rapid diagnostics that can be used in commercial and hospital labs or even doctors’ offices so that medical professionals and their patients have the information they need to take action,” said Bright.

The FDA also published new guidance and templates for diagnostics developers that provide some technical details on how to confirm the performance of their COVID-19 tests and recommends that laboratories double-check the first five positive and first five negative clinical results.

After the test has been validated, labs should notify the FDA of its use and submit a completed emergency authorization request within 15 business days.

well who cares. The point isnt to put people in prison but to put them in their houses.

A little fear of getting arrested ,a long drawn court battle and ending up in prison will do the work for the idiots.

I don't get the toilet paper craze. Just take a quick shower... or hop in enough to rinse your parts and then get out. I do this at home. It's NBD.

The guy on Joe Rogan is a really smart guy. He's also a known alarmist trying to sell a book. He's been right on some things (Italy), but his theories have been really wrong on some things (S. Korea).

I know a guy who works at a place that has an IT guy, and the IT guy knows a guy that said Mayor Turner is going to announce a shut down for the entire city tomorrow night. I think it's all bogus hearsay but at this point who the eff knows.
