Belelguese is one of the few stars I can see with my telescope. There goes Orion.

I hope it happens before I die. The supernova will be magnificent to watch.

Well, maybe it hasn't happend yet, relative to the speed of KingCheetah.

I sometimes catch myself reading a thread like, "Is KingCheetah going to kill that newb." And by the time I say it, it's already been done.

It certainly isn’t a moon! The reason I thought of you is your interest in space and NASA, and that you are the nearest thing to a scientist that we have around here, as far as I know. So no tidbits floating around that we may have missed relating to Betelgeuse and it’s recent behavior?

Yeah, it's odd seeing people thinking of something like this as though it were a current event.. anything we see in the night sky is ancient history.. whatever we are seeing from this star, it happened around 700 years ago.

Oh, absolutely! In fact, being that close, cosmically speaking, we are practically french-kissing that thing. It's just too bad our life spans are too short to ever be able to do anything other than speculate about it.

I’ll share if I hear anything. Am currently embedded with a bunch of theorists, and they def do not GAF about Betelgeuse or anything that’s not a black hole.

They should be really interested in Betelgeuse as it could actually become a black hole.

OP screwed up another thread. This clearly should been a poll for us all to comment our own well informed opinions as to whether Betelguese is about to go supernova in simple "yes" or "no" fashion.

I had to google to see how bright this would actually get if goes supernova.

Not only will Betelgeuse be visible during the day, but it will rival the Moon for the second-brightest object in the sky. Some models "only" have Betelgeuse getting as bright as a thick crescent moon, while others will see it rival the entire full moon. It will conceivably be the brightest object in the night sky for more than a year until it finally fades away to a dimmer state.
    From this article: https://www.forbes.com/sites/starts...happen-when-betelgeuse-explodes/#7d3b7f8913ac

    That'd be cool as hell.
