Of Course Trump’s Tariffs Hurt U.S. Manufacturing
Protectionism isn’t helping its intended beneficiaries, new research shows.

In a paper released last month, Aaron Flaaen and Justin Pierce, economists at the Federal Reserve Board, studied the effects of the unusual tariff escalation imposed by the U.S. against its trading partners — China, most notably — that began in 2018. The study compared industries such as electrical lighting equipment, motor vehicle manufacturing, forging and stamping, and architectural and structural metals — some more affected by tariffs and others less — to assess the effects on employment, output and prices.

The study found that the protection from import competition provided by the tariffs, in isolation, does increase overall manufacturing employment. If an industry is shifted from the 25th percentile to the 75th percentile of exposure — that is, from relatively little exposure to tariff protection to a good deal of exposure — employment would be expected to increase by 0.3 percent.

But this isn’t the end of the story, because tariffs do more than protect companies from foreign competition. They also increase the costs businesses face to purchase the goods they need for production, which the economists estimated reduces employment in affected industries by 1.1 percent. These rising costs suppress employment more than protection from import competition supports it.

Taking these factors into account, the Fed study found that manufacturing employment was reduced by 1.4 percent as a consequence of the trade war. Beyond reducing manufacturing employment, the study concluded that producer prices increased, but that manufacturing output did not. So the tariffs didn’t just hurt the economy as a whole, but damaged the manufacturing sector specifically.

And he says bernie is a socialist... basically, farmers have been and continue to be hurt by trump's tariff wars. So he promises even more tax-payer money to get votes in the November election. And lies again about where that money will come from (not the "massive tariff money" coming into the country), no mater how much he yells (all caps) about it...

The percentage of financially vulnerable farmers climbed from 31% in 2014, according to the report that examines growers' ability to cover short-term liabilities such as seed, fertilizer and herbicides with easily accessible assets such as cash, stored grain and market-ready livestock. Farmers have struggled to escape a downturn that began in 2013, a slump made worse by a U.S. trade war with China, Mexico and Canada that cut exports and depressed already low prices.

Iowa farm debt hit $18.9 billion in the second quarter, the highest level in the nation, according to Ohio State University agricultural lending data. However, Iowa's loan delinquency rate was 1.5%, ranking 39th lowest nationally. Nationally, farm debt is projected to reach a record high of $416 billion, U.S. Department of Agriculture data shows. When adjusted for inflation, U.S. farm debt sits just below the 1980 record at $431.6 billion, the high before the 1980s farm crisis. It's still the worst recession in Iowa after the Great Depression.Farmers' declining working capital — primarily the cash they have on hand to pay short-term bills — equaled $189 an acre over five years, according to Plastina's study, which looked at tax returns and other financial documents for 214 mid-sized farms in Iowa. With about 16,200 mid-sized farms in Iowa, with each growing crops on an average of 815 acres, the study indicates farm operations have lost up to $2.5 billion in working capital over the past five years.Iowa had 24 farm bankruptcies over the past year ending in September, a 140% increase over a year earlier. Altogether, Iowa has 86,100 farm operations.
