That's a very fair assessment of Nolan.

I would also add: He was an Astro. He was a Ranger.

If you believe what the old timers have to say, Nolan Ryan was also incredibly stubborn, thin skinned and as a result very difficult to coach....... however it also gave him extreme confidence and he backed down to no one.

I will say this, had he pitched his whole career with the Dodgers or Yankees.... he likely would have another 50 wins and someone would be calling him the greatest pitcher in nearly 100 years.

I've seen a pic of a Mets scouting report on him from like 1967. Pretty cool.

too funny - I haven't thought that much about it, but my first blush is that on stuff he should be higher, best combination of fastball, curve I have seen that is consistently good, but the intangibles ding Nolan because in part due to the teams he played on throughout his career.

I'm not that much more of an old timer than you, but I can confirm that he is NOLAN RYAN (say it like he plays it up in his commercials "knoowlin rhyyyaan"), and he has no qualms about letting everyone that matters around him know it...an extremely ornery, sarcastically jovial, arrogant, hilarious man. But he's Nolan Ryan, he can do whatever he wants. Still cool as hell to talk some baseball or ranching with.
