He's such a good contract negotiator that he fumbled the Clowney franchise tag negotiation, couldn't get Tunsil extended and over-payed Nick Martin and Mercilus. Nobody raved about this guy when he was hired, when Gaine was fired, no one said the "Texans are okay, they have Chris Olsen". This is more of the media saying everything Billy O does is wrong. Imo, this is a firing to get Caserio in but apparently we'll all rue the day that Chris 'Negotiation Virtuoso' Olsen was let go

He should be, he negotiated those contracts. I know because its in his title

It's hard to quantify how Olsen really affected the org.

If he truly was just a contract negotiator and capologist, then he can't really be blamed for executing the signings and the players that were chosen.

You can try to say he should have done a better job negotiating, but if it wasn't his call to execute the contract (this would normally be a GM or 'director of player personnel' thing), then that absolves him of most of the blame. A bad contract isn't a bad contract until it is signed. Sometimes you have to walk away, and we don't know if Olsen had power over that.

I don't recall the Texans ever being in a really bad cap situation during Olsen's tenure, either.

You can't be in a bad cap situation UNLESS you are really creative with the salary cap. The importance of a capologist has to do with two things. One is to frontload contracts so a player maybe overpaid today while the team is bad but will be cheap in the future when the team presumably will be better. The other is to backload contracts so a player can be cheap now while being good even if he will be expensive and bad later. Both are concepts that allow teams to concentrate more talent in a short window to maximize competitiveness for particular years.

The Texans never do that. They give out mostly standard contracts that pay people what they should be paid and their talent year after year reflect that kind of middle of the road path. Everything about the Texans is mediocrity, down to the way they give players contracts.

Granato said he was fired because he wanted to extend tunsil before trading him.

    So another smart guy gone

We're left with low IQ O'Brien and easterby making big decisions

Easterby is behind BOB and answers to BOB.

    Could that change? Sure.

This might be true but BoB was making power plays long before Easterby came along, including the very first domino when BoB forced McNair's hand in parting ways with Rick Smith. And although McNair was familiar with Gaine, that hire doesn't happen without BoB giving his input first IMO. It is widely accepted that Gaine was BoB's pick. Not to mention he somehow negotiated a 5 year extension without a GM in place at the time. BoB was obviously in McNair's ear.

Also, Gaine was fired just a month after Easterby was fired. The decision could have very well came after Easterby's evaluation/recommendation, but don't think Cal pulls the trigger without BoB signing off on it.

I do agree that Easterby/BoB seem to be working in lockstep, but BoB is not deferring coaching and personnel decisions to Easterby. Dude has worked too hard to give that up. As far as the F/O being aligned, we honestly have no idea. The 3 headed monster of Olsen, Easterby and BoB was all going swimmingly well from all accounts.

You're right we dont know for sure but somebody who has contacts within the org told me that Gaine was a Bob McNair hire. The last one he made before passing.

Yet they were one of the last eight teams standing.

Not the best org, but hardly a joke.

Actually, I think Houston Facepalms has a nice ring to it and really captures the essence of this two-decade old team much more than the current name.

Just rename the Astros the Houston Sighs and the Rockets the Houston Eye Rolls, and we've accurately updated Houston sports for the 21st century.

The Texans are not a joke in the way the Lions are.

The Texans win games, and they can win more than half their games.

The Texans just do not tend to have as many highs or lows as other franchises.

They are just very "meh" and very predictable in how they conduct their business, not very progressive from a business model.

After nearly 20 years fans are sick of never going to a conference or super bowl.

42 years, if you count the Oilers.

Not a single conference championship game appearance in this city since 1978.

When Bum said "next year, we're gonna kick that door in" who could have guessed that 42 years and 2 different teams later, we'd still be waiting.

You can even use everybody’s beloved chiefs as an example as well.

Could be wrong but first super bowl since 50 years ago.

last year was the first time they played in an AFC championship game since then I believe.

And their win against the colts was their first playoff victory in years before that I think they last 8 straight playoff games.

But again I could be wrong and would love to be corrected and or be provided with the right information.

But my point is while it isn’t exactly the success this city and fans want and expect...the Texans have been winning division titles and have won playoff games. Again not that it means anything because the goal is to get to at least and a AFC championship game and actually playing in and winning a Super Bowl.

But this team has had success and has had some success in the post season.

Even look up the ravens and how many times they have won their division and or playoff games since their last super bowl. But I do understand they have won the big game and it’s something I believe the Texans will do as well with Deshaun Watson.
