Honestly a little surprised the team brought back Devo.

The 2 million isn't exactly game changer money, but he's been really bad since the middle of 2018. I guess they just decided the chance that he can regain form is worth it given how thin our bullpen is when it comes to proven options.

thought the same thing. I wonder if his downfall is at all injury related and perhaps he’s a bit healthier in 2020

If you draft or initially sign a player... And he reaches free agency with you... And you give him a qualifying offer....and they end up going elsewhere...
I think the CBA should change for these rare circumstances and you should be afforded better draft compensation.
So this past year, we would be talking about Bumgarner and Rendon.
The Nationals would, let's say, get the 11th pick and the Giants the 12th pick in the upcoming draft and slide everyone else down.
The current system penalizes teams for drafting well, developing their players and valuing continuity.
Of course, this is self serving with Springer coming up. But I do feel that the current compensation is not fair for the unique circumstance.

The system as is gives teams control for as much as a decade of a player's professional career (all on one year contracts), it's absurdly skewed to drafters as is. No need for yet another kick in the ass on the way out by further hurting their earning potential.

There should be some system that better protects teams from the blue blood carnivores, but it has to be fair to the players as well, which the current system sure as hell isn't.

Could also be a negotiating tactic towards a long term deal. Hopefully they work something out before the season starts. We don’t even have a WS ring without George. Heart and soul of this team

Agree. This is just a negotiation. Houston anchoring to a lower number for year 1 as a starting point. I’m starting to think the chances are higher than people think that a Springer extension and a Correa trade will both happen soon.

There seemed to be a rift forming between Bregman and the Astros when they were working on his pre-arbitration contract for 2019 and then boom he signs for 100 million.

Stop spouting sense amongst the internet experts... Springer hates the Astros and Luhnow and will reveal the next cheating scandal!

Something off topic to break up the monotony of arbitration and filling out 40-man....

I don’t necessarily think the odds favor those 2 things happening, just that they are higher than most people think. Especially on the Correa trade, a lot will have to come together. I do not think a Correa trade will happen while Luhnow is suspended. I don’t think a Springer extension will be affected by Luhnow’s status. Crane and whoever the interim GM will be probably have a good idea of the parameters for a deal.

Now that Harris is gone, we needed someone else to blow the lead for us in the 2020 World Series.

How would it hurt the players?
It would help them by having teams be more likely to not trade them away, providing more consistency for the players. Again, this would only be 3-4 players a year at most likely.
I agree though that the teams have too much control for too long. It's ridiculous that the average guy first becomes a free agent at 30.

We could not afford that? Or we just don't like left handed pitchers. I don't know. But I still think we are thin at pitching since LMJ is a big question mark going into the year.

Better compensation for teams increases the likelihood of the qualifying offer being given. Not being traded away in last year keeps the QO intact. Players would make more without a QO as what a team gets/losses to sign a player with a QO is taken into account in a player's offer (not a big deal for big contracts).

Drafting well means a team gets 6-7 years of MLB service. Not getting a better pick for a QO is not a penalty. The QO is meant as a system to help poor teams, and should be removed completely. QO should not be tied to how well a team drafted. Poor teams should be helped with revenue sharing or other means that aren't tied to particular players.
