I think with all the information available within the aviation industry they will be able to explain this in short order.

I get the idea of unforeseen consequences, and that it's kinda negligent to think you can do dangerous things and somehow guarantee control of the situation. At the same time, you can't put too much on Trump on this one if Iran shot down this plane. Iran would take most of the blame for not grounding planes and for not confirming targets before opening fire. Sure, they were in a chaotic situation (which they've partly created for themselves) but it is still their failure to perform. Not that we should hold Trump harmless here, but he'd be a secondary actor.

    https://www.newsweek.com/iranians-shot-down-ukraine-flight-mistake-sources-1481313

The Ukrainian flight that crashed just outside the Iranian capital of Tehran was struck by an anti-aircraft missile system, a Pentagon official, a senior U.S. intelligence official and an Iraqi intelligence official told Newsweek. None of the officials was authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

    ..

One Pentagon and one U.S. senior intelligence official told Newsweek that the Pentagon's assessment is that the incident was accidental. Iran's anti-aircraft systems were likely active following the country's missile attack, which came in response to the U.S. killing last week of Revolutionary Guard Quds Force commander Major General Qassem Soleimani, sources said.

    ...

The Civil Aviation Organization of Iran Chief has also invited Canada and Sweden to cooperate in the accident investigation, however, Chief Executive Ali Abedzadeh has stressed that he would not hand over the aircraft's black box—which may provide details of the doomed flight's final moments—to the United States.

    ...

Later Thursday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed that his officials have received "intelligence from multiple sources, including our allies and our own intelligence" indicating "that the plane was shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile."

    Yes and no.

There are always casualties involved in when you undertake something like a proxy war. I used to have this argument with Obama and his drone attacks..... nothing is clean, people die and suffer and time will tell if it was worth it.

When you play with fire you get burned........ and for people to claim there were no fatalities or costs associated is naive. Clearly there were.

I just got an email that one of my work colleagues was on that plane. Didn't know her, but still. Once more details come out, it might be a much bigger deal than the d$ck measuring contest that caused this catastrophe.

So was this related to the missile strikes or not?

Their air defense got twitchy because they thought Trump might retaliate for the missile strike and they lit up an airliner by mistake.

True story and I’m appalled by the thought of that also. At least the US, at the time, made efforts to express remorse and compensate the families of the victims. It’s still terrible and inexcusable, but at least some form of justice was carried out.

Five years ago Russia, either directly or indirectly, was responsible for shooting down MH17 over Ukraine with no repercussions whatsoever. A week after it happened you barely heard anything about it in the news.

I fear this tragedy will follow that same blueprint. Iran isn’t going to admit any wrongdoing.

Seems the evidence is pointing to that. Something to do with their missile defense system. The flight took off right as Iran put up their iron curtain or whatever you want to call it to protect from incoming potential fire from the US in retaliation, and the system shot the commercial flight down thinking it was a missile.

And of course Iran is lying about it to not take any responsibility or deal with any of the liabilities that might come back to them.

I think the developing evidence so far suggests Iran shot down the plane. Accidental or not, it needs to take responsibility for the lives lost.

Yeah i'm not jumping on board just yet....

Something doesn't sound right... Not saying it's not true...

Right now this is all speculation since know one in the US has access to the blackbox...

By it being surface to air that could be anyone and that also means someone trying to stage something.....

No..... it is just a cautionary tale that there are always costs associated with military response.

The arrogance is similar to that of Obama with drones.
