In Heaven there is no Beer - Any halfway decent polka band Drinking My Baby Goodbye - Charlie Daniels Band
A @Mango sighting! There's better, older versions of this one, one of the original hillbilly drinking songs, but I'll post this because I like to remember just how ridiculous and fun this show was when I was a kid:
If you don't know Ted Hawkins you should. I was wondering around my favorite record store in DC back in the 80's and the store clerk's notes (yes they had curated record stores back in the day) said Ted Hawkins was the best blues player you have never heard of. Well I had never heard of Ted Hawkins but the store clerk might have been right. His back story is crazy - street busker who died just when he was finally gaining a modicum of success. These are not actually his best songs but they are on topic - thanks Buck for a decent thread. ETA:
Thanks @Pipe for a decent reply. Ted Hawkins sounds right up my alley, I'll check out more of his stuff when I get a chance.
Dignified old jazz record? It starts that way... Ok maybe not, but Coleman Hawkins did a smooth very 1940's saxaphone jazz version of the same song. (I never would have come up with this one myself. Ran into it looking for something else.)
