What happened? I stopped reading after the first paragraph. I hate news stories that are written like this one.

Just tell me what happened. Report. Don't give me a descriptive novel. It's just sports, man.

Yeah I agree with you, the writer tries too hard to make the piece featureish. Basically the former Kings endorsement revenue guy used a shell company to scam the Kings of some $13 million dollars over 10 years (the chunk of which came from a California credit union and Kaiser Permanente). It was more a lack of oversight than anything else that enabled the scams. The dude is pretty delusional too, thinking he could just pay the money back and avoid jail time, reminds me of the Kettlemans in Better Call Saul.

Exec who made $350,000 a year wanted more money so set up shell companies to siphon money from sponsorship deals. Bought luxury properties with money totaling $14 million+. Used naive companies like golden 1 and kaiser permanente who target the American poor and don't have system of due diligence to see where the money going. Will get out in 3 years after good behavior and start redemption story.

I read the story earlier but maybe didn't retain: His wife was stupefied when he revealed to her what he'd done. I'm supposing she didn't know of all the expensive-as-heck properties he'd purchased.

    I'm too lazy to re-read, it's a long article.

I'm assuming he isn't black, because if he were black you would have mentioned it.

You'd be surprised how many wives don't really ask... as long as the lifestyle is good. Also many buy with 20% down.

He did sing rap lyrics in an attempt to motivate his employees to make more money. It's mentioned in the article.

The style of the article y'all are reacting to is one I also detest: they teach this a lot in journalism and writing programs though. It's called the "anecdotal lede," starting an article as if you're in a beautiful piece of literature, with a dramatic scene. The good thing is you can train yourself to skim to exactly where the awfulness ends.

I read a lot of science reporting, and it's especially bad there. "He shook his head, checked his notebook, and returned to the telescope." lulz. Just tell us the freaking news, please. It seems few enough people can just write the basics that we'd appreciate it.

The writer is also a weirdo and extremely socially awkward. I remember one of the former Hawks managing partners talking about how Arnovitz makes people very uncomfortable.

Completely unfair critisism for the author.

This is NOT a breaking news article. This story was reported months ago already and everyone knew about the trial and sentencing.

The journalist just gave more details.
