I think most of use live our lives where all three of these align Some folx will lead quite legal lives. . . but are very immoral and maybe unethical When you see politiicians and even some businesses They kind of fall into this category Most outrage or hedging comes on this like What MY GUY isn't illegal? <-- generally a person will accept immorality andbeing unethical in THEIR GUY What YOUR GUY DID IS IMMORAL? <--- When it is not MY GUY then I will point out what they doing is immoral and I think should be illegal. . . . . Even if the actions are the same. . . . .. it seems alot of Americans are about Selective enforcement of their morals, ethics and even laws. They are quite ok with Brock Turner getting a small sentence for rape but then are equally ok with deporting veterans. They are quite ok with unlimited immigration but they are equally ok with high taxes Legality is the morality of a nation (not a person or even a group) The fights in our nation USE TO BE over morals and ethics. Now .. . they are more over WHO is the person violating and whether or not they should be held to similar standards. Rocket River
Is this so? That the law is the minimum consensus on morality? I think there is a moral dimension to what is the right amount of legislating, but I don't like to think of the law as a moral articulation. I think of the law as a system for maintaining order. For example, we punish murder not because murder is wrong but because murder and the potential for murder causes society to work less well. Of course, people are still strongly pulled toward thinking of the law in moral terms, which is how we get into debates about the prosecution of things like prostitution, abortion, illegal immigration, etc.
Interesting. Legality is neither more or ethical but simply a ways and means of maintaining order (For the "Elites"?) Rocket River
Ideally for everyone, but we know elites do manage to leverage it for their own interests more than others are able to.
Neither side has ever had a monopoly on morals or ethics, it's just that the GOP side has now thrown their sanity out the window too by nominating, electing and now defending Donald freakin Trump, of all people. I've always hoped it was just temporary, but now I'm really starting to wonder...
Actually it is not even close, whereas the Dems leave office like Franken, the GOP lies and does everything it can to stay in power...Jim Jordon cough cough. The GOP is WAY WAY WAY worse - basically they are bought and paid for, where the Dems have some bad actors, it is not close to the same. DD
Juan is right. Law is about preventing chaos. We cannot function without protection from outsiders as well as protection from each other. That being said some laws revolving around subjects such as gay marriage or about morality but for the most they are about functioning Laws on drug usage for instance aren't about morality as much as a fear of how people who use drugs interact with everyone
