Yao did what he had to do. Not every decision is made based on personal feelings.

The difference about the Lakers and the Warriors is that they never bent over backwards to appeal to China.
They don’t have tencent and other Chinese corporation ads all over their stadium.
Their city jersey is about their city.
Les Alexander has major investments in China.

Yao is what’s doing best for Yao. That Chinese actress disappeared from the planet for a year then emerged saying some please forgive me crap.
Don’t want that to happen to Yao.

Some of the takes recently have made me question the average clutchfan.

    Yao is a standup guy
    And a Chinese citizen
Which means the worst can happen to him if he disagrees with his government

    Yao’s hand was forced.

But I expect him to help fix this situation if he wants me to stick my neck out for him when arguing his HOF credentials with nonbelievers

    This, this, THIS!

Also, @ all the people that want to "disown" Yao: The dude is looking out for his family and he is also looking out for his country. Everyone that's siding with Morey and saying "screw China" is looking out for the US.

So if you are going to denounce Yao or whatever because he's just doing what he feels is best for his current situation, then you guys are hypocrites because you're doing the exact same thing.

If Yao shuns us for believing a Chinese government should allow free speech, cut ties. How is Yao Ming greater than freedom? His loyalty to the Rockets seemed true, but he's siding against us because of freedom of speech and expression?

If Yao wasn't changed by his experience in America enough to know we believe in freedom, he wasted his time in Houston. If Yao doesn't speak up for Daryl Morey, his friend, in this situation.. that's not much of a friend. I'd wait for his official public reaction to all of this and if it's not friendly towards the Rockets... take his jersey out the the rafters, pull him from the hall of fame, unretire his number and forget this whole thing happened.

The Rockets and the NBA gave him a great life. If he doesn't respect that enough to try to make peace with the Rockets, what do the Rockets owe Yao Ming? His rise to success in life Rocketed up in Houston.

Well that's nice, thanks for the feedback.

My prose is not that Yao is bad or even that this move is bad. This situation has created a land mine of issues and there is a myriad reasons as to why Yao cannot publicly support the Rockets . It's also exposing a lot of things to the greater public. My question is whether The NBA and this fan base has overrated Yao because of how likable he was during his tenure and the amount of talk there was about cultural impact.

He's in the hall of fame and in no way deserves it for his play alone. It's all based on cultural impact.

My take is that his cultural impact is non-existent. I can think Yao was a very good, but not that important of a player because of this. @tinman knew that we became Chinese puppets. Yao turned us into Chinese mannequins during his tenure because China controlled Yao and therefore controlled the franchise under Les. Tilman bought the team knowing China called the shots and this can be shown just by taking a quick look at corporate sponsorship next time you're at Toyota Center.

Yao is arguably not even a top 10 player in Rockets history but we talk about him like he's an all time great. This is my opinion and does not represent the overall view of the Rockets but the NBA supports my ability to educate myself and speak on issues. My issue is that Yao did not bridge two countries and his whole legacy is based on that.

He lives in China and is a citizen.
Daryl Morey isn’t a Chinese citizen and look at what the government is doing to him.

    Come on dude.

Yao isn't viewed as a citizen to China. He is viewed as their property, an export. Therefore his impact was nothing but a Trojan Horse and it worked.

Are you saying even Yao Ming who is considered to be a great prize in China can't say what is on his mind? Living in fear of your own words is bullcrap. No one should have to live in fear like that.

If he's a good ambassador between these two parties, he should make peace.

But he lives in China and can’t speak his mind

You need to watch that Richard Gere movie where he gets screwed over in China .

This is like a girl driving in Saudi Arabia
Not worth the risk to her life
