[Feigen] Patience a virtue for former No. 1 pick Anthony Bennett

With skills refined to better fit with the way the game had changed, Anthony Bennett joined the Rockets looking for another chance. The first player taken in the 2013 NBA Draft, Bennett had spent the past two seasons in the G League and much of the previous season in Turkey, improving his 3-point shooting to be the sort of range-shooting forward the NBA values and the Rockets covet.

When training camp began on Saturday, however, Bennett was forced to watch with tendinitis in his left knee. Still, having had to pay so many dues, patience has become as vital as shooting touch.

“That’s pretty much the whole story, just being patient, being ready,” Bennett said. “It’s tough, but it’s something I can deal with. I’m just trying not to aggravate it too much.”

Bennett, who said he is day-to-day, signed with the Rockets on July 25 and has been working with Rockets development coach John Lucas and Rockets players since. That could help make up for time lost now.

“Playing a lot of runs, getting feel for my position on the team,” said Bennett, who made 45.3 percent of his 3s last season with Agua Caliente. “(The opportunity) is really important. I’m doing everything I can to maintain and get better.

“This team shoots a lot of 3s and I think I’ll be a huge contributor just staying locked in and being consistent.”

He will be lucky to make the team. I'm not holding my breath that he will be any good for us.

Bennett, McLemore and Frazier are basically competing for the 15th roster spot. Bennett needs to get back soon.

Would be shocked if he makes it, but it would be a great gift if he does. If he reaches 80% of his potential, he would be an excellent backup PF/C.

Let's hope it works out. He could be a better Ryno if he figures out how to be locked in long term.

Hoping one of Bennett or McLemore can turn it around with Rockets.

As much as I love Green, there is room for improvement AND injection of youth.

He needs to be able to bring something else to the table. We don't need another guy that's just a shooter with the addition of Anderson. Can he rebound? Switch and guard multiple positions?

This is TBD - if Bennett can reinvent himself on D, he will be a tough match up.

Longer and more explosive than Tucker, also able to create for himself. Just lacks PJ's heart and BBIQ.

The talent is there, just needs to add the will.

    Has yet to prove that.

I'm choosing to be optimistic over Bennett. If he's not overweight and the three point shooting is real, he has enough NBA-level tools in his arsenal to be a rotation player.

This team is going to need one of Bennett, Ryno, or Clark to step up and be a contributor. Otherwise it's going to be another year of giving way too many minutes to Gerald Green.
