Can this guy be better than Brady if he were giving the chance to play with an offensive line that technically let you have a picnic on every play?
I don't know about better. I'd just like the offensive line to be good enough so we can have a chance to see Watson play for the Texans until he's 40+.
Teams also know that you’re not going to get to Brady by bringing pressure. He’s just going to pin point the weak spot of the defense pre-snap and find the wide open receiver. The only way to stop Brady is to somehow cover everybody AND bring pressure with base rush defense.
Brady has been in the NFL for almost 20 years, the man has seen everything. Brady didn't have a terrible o-line when he was up and coming like Watson. Deshaun is younger than Brady was in 2001 when he won the super bowl as a game manger (18 TD 12 INT). Deshaun at 23 is better than Brady was at 24. Brady had the GOAT coach and an elite football team around him that allowed him to develop on his own schedule and not have to worry about career threatening hits every week. Brady was drafted into a privileged position at QB. Watson was not.
This is the reason why olineman seem to leave New England and get much worse. Brady, and Manning had it as well, have elite pocket presence and ability to audible for quick throws for blitzes. While the Texans line does stink PFF attributed 3 of the 6 sacks on Monday night to Watson. Lance Zierlien's dad, a former NFL oline coach, said that on the Tunsil sack Watson dropped back 11 steps which is too far and it should have been 8 steps. This allows your lineman to funnel speed rushers to the outside while the qb can step up into the pocket and make a throw. When Watson dropped back 11 steps Tunsil just funneled the rusher directly into the sack. He also said the oline wasn't as bad as it looked, and it's correctable. Honestly this sounds like bad coaching to me.
One way to compare the difference that Brandy and Manning make to an oline is to look at the sack difference when they had another QB playing during their injury years. That most likely speaks to their innate ability to read defenses, dissect them, and execute the play to the correct player as quickly as they do. Which shows that an elite QB can absolutely elevate the line in front of him. Our problem with Watson is that he's still learning and sometimes that ability to run can be a hindrance to his development as a pocket QB while making him that much more susceptible to injury.
If watson isn't that fast at reading the defense then tailor offense to his strength. Why don't they run the Garry Kublaik offense. Do those bootlegs. Give him more time. He isn't brady or manning, but he has his strengths.
Eventually after a decade or so yeah. Brady knows the game inside out, has vast experience together with amazing accuracy and a very quick release. With time Watson could also acquire these talents but for now, he is still on a steep learning curve. Still, with what we have already seen, he could mature into one of the greats.
Sounds like DeShaun needs a bit of coaching....from a guy that used to be heralded as an offensive expert because he was an OC for New England at one time....
